Hatch struts - source?

I need a new pair. Although the hatch pops up off the switches the alarm and rear screen don't. One strut leaks too.
Hopefully a new pair will solve it all in one go.
I thought I bought the last set from Promax but I can't see them on the website. I need to make sure all the electrical connections are rigth too, made that error before.
So who bought what recently?

I got new aftermarket ones and my de-mister does not work very well now. I am waiting on some decent used OEM ones getting delivered from a forum user. My boot pops up great with the aftermarket ones however, despite everything being connected and looking ok, the rear screen heater is quite feeble. I've decided that a proper de-mister is more useful than a self popping hatch although I've been told the OEM ones on the way to me are fresh enough for self popping!

I would get OEM if I was you.

Bit slow off the mark there David, I did advertise on here I was throwing some out last month...................

I have a new pair on the shelf in the garage that I bought years ago and then fitted some others. Not sure but I think they were from ProMax or maybe Bert at Berlyn.

I can have a look at them on Friday if you like (I'm away until then).

I got some for my Boxster through eBay and they were the same make as the originals. Not very expensive either.

Chris.

Hi David,

Found the struts but I'm afraid they are no good - I seem to have cannibalised them for one of the ball joint connectors, possibly when I fitted the other set that I had as it is ringing a faint bell now.

Sorry [:)]

Waylander on 968uk fitted some, thread here if you can access it :

Graham,
No problem, thanks for looking.
Chris - I'll have a look, they should be the same as for 968s

Are the aftermarket items handed?

According to John, they are handed, one is insulated from the body, and the other should earth to the body...

"And yes, they are sided and need to be the right fitment, otherwise the electrics will play up on the car and the heated rear screen will not work. One side is conductive the other is insulated.. in other words, one strut is used to provide an earth to the car body, the other is supplied power which is insulted from the body ends of the strut and has two terminals on it, to plug the wiring connectors for the heated rear screen to as well as the wire that comes through the bodywork as the feed for the rear screen, without allowing it to earth straight out to the body."

Taken from a post over on Tipec.

If they aren't handed then you risk malfunction or even electrical fire. What usually happens is that your heated rear window doesn't work and you have problems with indicators and who knows what else..

Yes - I understand that oe ones are handed, but are the aftermarket ones?

Basically, if you have a pair of uninsulated struts you will shorting the demister feed to earth, best case you will blow a fuse, worst case it will cause a fire. If they are both insulated, then the rear demister will have no ground, and so won't operate.

Scam - the ones you bought that don't allow your rear screen to demist properly, did they have different part numbers for each side?

I will need to check. They both looked the same. I have had no fires or fuse blows, the demister operates, just not as good as it used to work.

Type 911 list the 968 as different from the 944. Aftermarket ones are handed, £18 plus VAT each, OEM £35 plus VAT each.

ORIGINAL: 36270k

Have bought them for the 924 from PorscheShop
They may still have them in stock

Better to go without and use a cut down broomstick to hold it open, than trade with those clowns.

Checked mine last night, same part number on both. Got my used OEM ones delivered today so will fit them tonight in lieu of upcoming de-mister required weather!

The earth to body is the drivers side one, which also has the boot light actuator on it. It has a metal connector at the hatch end. The other side is insulated from the hatch with plastic connectors top and bottom.

Scam - if you don't mind, what did a good used set cost you? Where did you get your aftermarket ones from? Fraserpart seem to state that theirs are the same as OEM, but I have asked the clarify.

I had ordered a pair from Berlyn, but I half expected to get a call from David (it seems some of the prices on their website are out of date), which I did yesterday, saying that he was not happy with the quality of the ones they were previously supplying (£18 each). He said he could supply what I assume are Porsche ones for £37 per side iirc, not sure if that was including VAT.

Well my used OEM ones make the demister work but don't hold the boot up very well! £15 I spent on them. However I have been able to use them to suss out how to make my aftermarket ones work with the demister so all is not lost. I just need to earth the driver side one so I'm going to run an earth from the battery and see how that goes. My after market ones are both insulated. Maybe get some time on Monday to fiddle about.

I don't know where the aftermarket ones are from, I got them unused 2nd hand from a forum member. They do ping the boot up well though!
