Has my Torsion bar gone Twang!

Hi,

I have an odd sound coming from the rear, which sounds like flicking a ruler on the edge of a desk!

It doesn’t happen all the time, oddly it seems to happen under acceleration, so could it be the Torsion bar?

I have had the car up on stands and can’t see anything loose, and nothing is loose in the boot, so I am in the right direction, or missing something obvious.

As alway, I appreciate your advice

I think if your torsion bar had snapped the car would sit low on the side which was broken.

Could it be the anti-roll bar drop links?

Could be the gearbox mount, CV joints, torsion bar rear upper mounts (these could look fine as mine did but disintegrated when removing).

Thanks, i will take another look this weekend

I had a mystery clonk at the rear for a couple of years, just driving over dips or humps. We'd started looking at bushes, then at MoT service/check for handbrake we found the lining on the handbrake shoe had come adrift and rattled about when suspension moved!

Who'd have thought it? Does your handbrake work...?

Handbrake does work. The sound is very different though, really makes me think I have a very big metal ruler in the back!

That makes me think of the torsion bar trailing upper arm that attaches to the body via a metal/rubber mount above the rear wheel.
