handbrake

As per James - sounds like glazing on either/or/both the "drum" surface on the inside of the hat or the friction surface on the shoes. Try a good scrub on both with a coarse sandpaper (100 grit or so) or machinist cloth to break any glazing. Also - examine the shoes to see if you are getting full contact on the shoe and not just getting contact on the leading edge - if the shoes were replaced without being shaped to the "drum" you may be getting only a small area of contact.
 
Ok so i have been having major problems getting my handbrake to do much, i have stripped the drums down and everything looks to be in very good condition the shoes still have the gold paint on and every moving part has copper grease on it, the cables are all shiny and new looking, i have adjusted the drums so i cannot turn them with the handbrake only on one click.

And yet i still cannot stop my car from rolling forwards down a gentle gradient with the handbrake alone, agh!

Everything looks good but the sum result is very poor.

Please help as i have a re-test booked for Thursday and i dont think the braking effort is going to be sufficient as it is.

Best thing to clean them up is to pull the handbrake on whilst driving. Obviously not too much, the contact surface on the drum gets very corroded due to not actually scrubbing on anything as the brake is usully applied when stationary. A couple of pulls and it should be fine. BMWs have the same problem. Alasdair
 
Had mine sorted during the MOT and the garage released the handbrake cable right off then adjusted the rear wheels and then tightened up the cable to 3 clicks works fine and the shoes are not the newest.
