HANDBRAKE CLONK ?

Hi Guys, over the last week or so ive noticed, that if i leave the car overnight or for a day & reverse off my drive, once in forward gear i get a single light "Clonk" from the offside rear wheel, almost as if the parking brake has just freed itself off, has done it a few times when ive reversed up & braked, then driven forward & braked, always a single light "Clonk", there are no other noises comng from the rear when i brake normally or when the car is being driven, anyone know if this is common & what the cause may be without me having to remove the rear wheels & spending ages under there ? cheers, Jinxy

I've had a sensation of the rear end rising when beginning to reverse before the brake has released even after I'd let the handbrake off and that is quite common but what you describe sounds as though it is doing the same but to a lesser degree.

I've had it on my 924S and 944 turbo quite badly and the 968 too, even a light releasing clunk as I pull away in the Cayman occasionally the design has hardly changed in more than 20 years! Don't be too concerned unless it gets worse.

You don't say if you always use your handbrake prior to the clunking sound. If so - it likely your parking brake shoes sticking to the drum on the inside of the brake disc. A few things can cause this sticking - usually some rust build up inside the parking brake mechanism that is holding the return springs until the wheel moves OR if you have a slight leak in your bearing seals, grease will cause the shoes to bind a little until the wheel turns OR the shoes may be worn enough that they are binding to the drum until the wheel turns OR the handbrake cables may be frayed a little and binding until the wheel turns.

So - like Buddy says - probably not a real emergency but should take it down and check it out.

If it's rust, try driving a few yards (Carefully) with the handbrake about 2/3 on-should clean it off.

Cheers for the relies guys, yes i think i'll wait until this dreaded weather evens out a bit & take a look, itsa not causing any problems at the moment & the brakes pull superbly, so im not unduely worried at this point, will let you know what i find, cheers, Jinxy
