last few weeks had a rotational squeak from the nearside rear, had a wheelbearing noise as well from front nearside. Not having a garage anymore booked it in to local garage couple of weeks ago, took it in 8am got call at 8:30 to say cant find noise and not convinced any problem with wheelbearings. Told them to change front nearside anyway as I would bet my months salary that was noisy. Did that and picked it up after work got a mile up the road and the squeak was there big time and got worse all way home. Took it back 2 days later having squeaked my way around town for two days. They had car all day, did about 20 miles and tell me cant find a problem but if it comes back take it in. Last Friday on a day off was driving me nuts took it in and they agree must be an issue at the rear nearside. Booked in for today. Collects this evening and tell me traced fault to nearside handbrake linkage seized (New cables 3000 and 5 months ago) but they then produce the following list of faults NSF bottom ball joint worn ( new bearing less than 50 miles ago) OSF shock absorber play in shaft ( two new bodge units 10000 miles ago) OSF wheel bearing play (nothing wrong 2 weeks ago) NSR inner CV boot burst and joint worn OSR inner CV joint worn Hand brake shoes in poor condition Think I need a holiday[
] and it still bl--dy squeaks Anyone recommend where to get handbrake shoes - dealer quotes £120 +£64 for springs and £12 for ajusters these are required cause porsche changed shoes and some time. Also CV joints, suggestions please Going to take car to mates after holidays and check it all out myself prior to buying anything. Do I miss my garage or what[&o]

Aren't the handbrake shoes common with a BMW 5-series of the same vintage? CV joints - I found Max Schenker at Frazerpart to be by fat the cheapest for these when I bought some a while ago. Sounds like you need to find someone else to work on your car ... be that you or just another indie. Oli.
Thanks Oli useful info re shoes will sus that out. They have only looked at my car recently and only because one of the mechanics I know quite well and he a top bloke, will be speaking to him later. Would be doing myself but no garage at present and I dont do kerbside motors anymore. Not a great choice of garages this neck of the woods lol
Yes, I read the bit about you not having a garage nowadays. Sorry to hear that. Talk to the decent mechanic, and hope that he can shed some light on the situation. It sounds like whoever gave you that condition report has a bit of explaining to do. Snag is that costs of parts and labour on old cars is what puts them off the road. I would struggle to run my S2 if I had to pay to have the work done on it; it is only the fact that I can do (and I like doing) the work myself that allows me to run something as glorious as a 944. (But then, it never ceases to amaze me how much people spend on cars generally - be they Porsches or Fiat Pandas ... ) Hope you resolve your problems soon. Oli.
I got hand brake shoes from gsf. Bmw 5 series late 80's to early 90's cost about £30. If you are in Inverness you should contact Alisdair(suzleruk).I would say it would be well worth a run down the road to get him to look at it.Also if you are a bit handy yourself Alisdair is usually ok with you hanging around and helping him. That way you can fix it once and for all and get to see with your own eyes what the problems are.

+1 - you should get in touch with him before spending another penny on it. He has loads of spares too.ORIGINAL: colin944 I got hand brake shoes from gsf. Thanks for the info guys got a week off coming up so will have a good look myself, just annoyed that one week they tell me cant find anything wrong next they come up with a list as long as your arm. Thanks Alisdair for the heads up on CVs, think thats prob a defo, not so sure about the rest. Anyone had an issue with handbrake shoes not fitting? Aberdeen Porsche say there was a change in the shoes at some point in time and without different springs and ajusters they wont fit? thank again for info and advice Oli know what you mean re keeping older car on road but gona keep this one a long time yet [

I found a local place that rents garage space with ramp for just 10 quid an hour so ideal for DIY jobs in a safe warm place .I will be derusting and sealing the bottom of my 944 this weekend .Hope this helps if you need a place to work as dealer prices would kill us off our hobby ! Hi Alasdair 6 hrs too late gave GSF a call earlier today and ordered 2 sets CVs - they seemed to indicate that was a discontinued item and these were the last in stock! Price was a bit cheaper than you quoted and they had shoes at a good price as well so ordered them as well. In Glasgow in a week or so on way back from hols so long as Thomas Cook dont go belly up[ORIGINAL: sulzeruk I have a set of virtually brand new shoes that came out of a car I broke Steve if thwey are any good. alasdair
The best laid plans of men and mice and all that GSF have given me the wrong CV joints think they must be for 2.5 or 2.7 non turbo and they dont have any stock of the correct joints[
] worse - the cars in bits and the garage shuts tomorrow for 2 weeks[
][
] so for those with an S2 or Turbo I believe you need a 25 spline CV the others being 33 splines is'nt life a bummer some times, shanks pony for me for a while[

Gah! I feel your pain... but maybe have a solution... I saw design911 have replacement S2/Turbo driveshafts (made by Q-DRIVE) for under 100 quid. I was thinking this makes more sense than replacing the joints at £80ish a side. Or is there something wrong with these Q-DRIVE replacements that I don't know about? I also need to do my driveshafts. Offside is an original (182k miles!) and the outside boot is split in half almost completely. Nearside outside (!) boot has a small split, but the driveshaft is newer (replaced in 2005). No noises as yet... I suppose it's a matter of time...
thanks for the info young man suspect that the price is for a drive shaft only not including CV joints etc The small print on the ad for the reconditioned shaft on the same page state comes with joints and rubber boots the others dont, but will check with them Drive Shaft Porsche 924S / 944 1985>> *Reconditioned Exchange Unit Code: 94433203801/1 Replacement Drive Shaft *Reconditioned Exchange Unit Fits: Porsche 924S 1986-88 Manual cars Porsche 944 2.5L, 2.7L 1985>> (not Turbo) Manual cars *Reconditioned Drive Shafts are sold on a exchange basis, A surchange of £75.00 will be held and then refunded when the old one is returned This driveshaft comes with joints and rubber boots. Thanks Alisdair I may take you up on that, stuffed at present because I took car to local garage ( I have all the tools but no garage facilities anymore) they shut shop for 2 weeks tomorrow so no time to get parts, local motor facor states they can get the correct joints for end next week, not sure i believe them. Checked a couple of on line suppliers of CV joints and although they list the joint as being for an S2 the technical spec states they have 33 splines, not the correct ones for my car. I may be down in Glasgow next week briefly can you PM me a contact number and price please cheersORIGINAL: sulzeruk I probably have a set of driveshafts here Steve if you need something to get you going, don't know how I would get them up to you though. Alasdair
Lol! I've not been called young for a while. Good point about the driveshafts not including the joints... that seems to make more sense. Bert... thanks for the links. I think in the new year I'll take the driveshafts off and see what needs replacing. I suspect probably just a boot on the nearside (because there's only about 20k miles on the nearside) and both joints on the offside. Two questions: Do the boot kits come with the bolts? Do the CV joints come with the boots?
