Good engine oil price at Amazon

Have just spotted that Amazon are selling Castrol Magnatec 10W40 at under £20 for 4 litres, free postage - nice timing for that Spring oil change. Mine arrived next working day too.
(..and if you have a leaky old engine then maybe Morrison's "value" 20W50 at £10 for 5 litres might be worth knowing - by the time that gloopy old stuff finally seeps through the leak and onto your exhaust, you have probably got to your destination anyway...)

Halfords Semi Synth 10/40 is on offer at the moment, £15, bit less when you borrow your dads trade card.

Its Comma though which means a dribble of Mobil bottom of the barrel and a good dose of used oil.

Have been using it for years on and off with no issues, that is what they list for the 944, it seems to have a good reputation, the previous owner put Mobil One in which I beleive is too thin and it is pretty expensive for a car that doesnt actually need a full synth. I would rather change it fairly often, it will only do 3k a year, if that. The Castrol wasnt any dearer really, just went for what was listed.

The specialist I spoke to advocated full dino 20/50 for my car but I cant help thinking I still want the engine to turn and not use all its power like some kind of bread kneading machine trying to fold that stuff.

Mobil 1's issue isn't its thinness, its still thicker than a 10W30, 0W30 0W20 (all of which are unsuitable by the way) as its still a *W40 grade oil, yes it will be slightly thinner than a 10W40 at working temps but still well within the specs for a 40 grade oil. The issue I have with the 0W40 oils is that large amount of viscosity improvers required to make it such a wide grade oil. Viscosity improvers break down and become less effective with time. Mobil 1 is a pretty good oil by all accounts, perhaps not my first choice to put in a 944 engine but not the worst either. More of an issue are the grades under *W40, such as those in the first sentence above and super thick *W60 oils. I would sooner use a 0W40 oil in my engine all year round than the super thick 10W60. Issue with the first being increased oil consumption but excellent cold start properties, issue with the latter being poor oil flow, more friction, less power, more heat and less mpg.
