Gearbox rattle, confused!

Hi everyone,

There is a constant rattling sound which seems like its coming from just under the gator of the gearstick in my 944. it almost sounds like a loose ball bearing rattling around. At higher revs it gets worse and it has got a bit worse over the last couple of weeks? I havnt had a proper chance to have a look at it yet, but any ideas would be much appreciated!?

its just come out the garage for a new headgasket (VERY COSTLY but had to be done!) plus new cambelt etc so im hoping fixing this gearbox/gearstick issue isnt too costly. Thanks a lot in advance!
 
Perhaps the torque tube bearing? These can be rebuilt at a cost but removal of the TT and refitting is not cheap nor easy. Does the sound go away on depressing the clutch? This could indicate a noisy clutch release bearing, but I wouldnt think you would hear this at higher revs whilst driving. When was the clutch last changed?

Is it engine or road speed related?
I had some of the half shaft u/j screws become loose but the rattle came from much further forward.
was it there before haedgasket job?
Dad hadjob done - came back with rattle - spanner sitting on top of gearbox!
Is gear change sloppy?

I had the same sort of rattle and it drove me mad.I removed the gatier and removed the circlip that holds the lever onto the linkage.I have packed out the shaft (that the circlip goes onto)with insulation tape(crude i know)however very effective for over 6 months and hey presto no more rattle[:)]
 
Another vote for the gearlever linkage...

I fitted a new lever from JMG but still had the noise. It almost sounded like the leather creaking and I was almost convinced it was this.

I managed to put a very small washer between the gearlever and the circlip and hey presto the noise was gone. [:D]

Just the rattle from behind the dash to find now [:mad:][:mad:]

not sure when the clutch was changed as ive only owned the car 2 months but the sound gets a bit quieter on depressing the clutch. It was there before headgasket job and is engine related not speed related. Im really gunning for gear lever linkage (i hope so anyway) as it does sound like your descriptions. Thanks a lot for all your opinions...
