Gearbox fitment ?

Dear All

I am pretty certain that my gearbox is finished after it stuck in 3rd on me a week or so ago..... have examined the shift mechanism per a previous post but can't find anything wrong, so am planning to source a replacement and change the box myself. Just wondered if any of you with a bit more experience know if any 944 box will directly fit or do I need a specific part code ? Mine is an '83 Lux, and I am aware the oval dash models have a gearbox fitment for the speedo (which I beleive I can ignore/plug) and I was not planning on fitting one with an LSD, but is there anything else I need to watch out for ?

Cheers

Alan

The various models had different gearing ratios to suit their engine characteristics. An S2 gearbox won't have the same ratios as a Lux box.

Any box will fit an '83.

Points to note - yours has 2 mounts, later ones have 1 but later boxes have the necessary holes to swap the mounts, they also have a hole for the speedo drive, just make sure its sealed>

S2 and turbo boxes have higher gearing (2.7s are too, but not noticeably so) so I would avoid them and try for a 2.5 or 2.7 one.

Can't remember the various codes though.....

Thanks All - exactly what I needed to know ! I suspected the gearing might be different, and as suggested will stick to a 2.5/2.7 box.

Nicksonmsport - many thanks for the offer..... will see if I can source a decent 2.5/2.7 box, and if not will be in touch ! Had no idea you were down this neck of the woods - would love to come take a look at your build sometime if you are open to visitors ?

If anyone out there has a known decent box, please drop me a pm to see if we can do anything..... I have no desire to spend 2 days swopping a gearbox to find I have acquired an eBay duff !

Cheers

Save yourself a huge amount of arse ache and take the time to knock up a cradle to bolt to a trolly jack. Makes the job so much more pleasant/safer/quicker.

alwigley no worrys, your welcome to come down for a chat and a poke about the turbo any time, good to meet fellow 944 owners! had a good chat with nick_968 who has a 968 turbo the other day when he picked up some carpets he bought. good luck with your box search!

Justin at Yew Tree had told me that someone on the estate was working a on a project 944. When you mentioned your location it occurred to me that you might be one and the same.

Hopefully my one will be spending less time there as we gradually bring it back up to standard. [:)]

yes thats right, i did have a grey s2 originally but it was to far gone rust wise, so it was stripped for spares and then i bought a black turbo which is now in progress for track days etc.
if you havnt seen it already there is a build thread here

good luck with your progress, it looks like a nice example anyway!

cheers

Out of interest how easy is it to rebuild the gearbox on these im looking for one as well and rather than fitting it blind i want to rebuild so it has many miles of use.
my synchro is a bit knackered on 2nd gear and whines even after an oil change, having never looked inside the box im not sure what what the setup is and which part is mostly likely to cause the whine.

It isnt practical(ly possible). You need a special factory tool to set the bearings in the diff.

Ah dammit is it to lock the bearings in place or does it set the backlash/play
ive noticed the porsche shop do a rebuild for approx £800 any reccomendations

You should have asked me that in 1997! Id suggest calling PH Sportscars in Shardlow. Simon, who runs the garage, used to rebuild gearboxes for Paul on his days off when he was a Porsche tech, so he can tell you exactly what the craic is, and whether they can still offer them.

I believe that PH still has someone who can do this, but cant recall anything further.

I recommend avoiding Pork Chop like the plague.
