Gear change when 'cold'

As mentioned in another thread, my S is going in to the dealers next week and I thought that whilst they are looking at my front suspension issue, I'd get them to check a couple of other issues that I have. Being new to the 987 I'm not sure if the gear change, when cold, is normal for it to be stiff / slow.

If any of you can shed some more light on this then I will know if I'm being over critical or if mine does indeed need attention.

Hi Dan, I notice that it gets slicker with a good warm up though I wouldn't say it is stiff when cold as with everything better when warm. If you have the sport shift then it is a little more noticeable. I fitted one a few months ago and found a difference when cold but I got used to it. There have been some Caymans where one of the selector cables have been trapped during the build which causes a strain as the cable is pinched and so doesn't flex in the normal way. This results in a broken cable but is extremely rare and if yours was effected it would most likely have gone before now.
 
Dan, if your Cayman's fitted with the short shift kit, I believe that what you're describing is quite normal. If not, it might be worth getting the PC to check the cable linkage routing while it's with them as cable failures are not unknown even on relatively low mileage cars. Jeff
 
Jeff & Kevan - many thanks for your replies. I don't know if mine is fitted with a short shift or not - as Kevan describes, it's not that its stiff it's just 'slower' than when it is warm. (this is all starting to sound a bit rude isn't it? [;)] I'll get them to check it over on Thursday. Thanks again, Dan.
 
Dan, You should be able to tell if yours has short shift or not as the throw between gears is very much less than on the standard shift. If it has got it the selection into and out of first gear is very stiff when the gearbox oil is cold. Chris
 
There lies the problem Chris - I don't have another vehicle to compare it too. I'm just wondering if I'm 'finding' problems with the car that aren't really there - as in a paranoid way. Oh god - am I getting old and fussy! [:(]
 
Sounds to me like you have a standard shift otherwise you would have found out about the first gear stiffness when cold, and what you describe is perfectly normal. I take it the car was sold to you without the factory options being listed as would be the case if you bought it from an OPC?
 
Indeed - I bought it privately and it has 10mths Porsche warranty, so the 111point checks were made 3 mths ago now. The gear change is part of this check. I think also that a few owners have their 'quick shifts' installed during their ownership and this would not necessarily be listed in the build sheet from new.
 
Dan, since the gearbox is at the rear of the car, the cable runs are relatively long compared with the 911 and most front wheel drive set-ups, so it's critical that there are no kinks in the cable, as Kevan mentioned. Inevitably, the change will be slightly more obstructive when the 'box is cold; especially so as the temperatures are now heading downwards. If it's not obstructive when the car's warmed up then I wouldn't think that anything is amiss. Sytner will be able to advise you and they may have a car fitted with the short shift for you to try for comparison with yours. Jeff
 
I often hear people on the 996 forum say that the 1st-2nd change is a bit stiff, and can't be rushed, until the gearbox oil has warmed up a bit. I certainly get that on my Cayman.
 
Can not say when I owned my Cayman S Sport Limited Edition I noticed any stiff gear changes when stone cold and it had a short shifter as standard I dont know if its something that comes with age or mileage mine only had 9 k on it and 2 years old Really was a sweet change any temp like butter. Unlike my GT3 which is really stiff until hot but thats normal.
 
Hi all i got my 06 cayman s direct from the main dealer 4 months ago and iv noticed that over the months when going into 3rd gear its not as smooth as all the others it sometimes feels like it gets a little jammed near to the end and you have to give it a bit of force to fully go in can anyone tell me if they had a similar problem and what they did to cure it? and what the problem actually was thanks
 
James, the gearbox shouldn't be obstructive when warm. If it's baulking in the manner you've described, perhaps the 3rd gear selector or the synchromesh is faulty. You mentioned that you purchased from a Porsche dealership, so I presume that your car came with a warranty. In that case you should ask them to investigate. Jeff
 
Another possibility is one of the operating cables or it's adjustment. As Jeff says OPC visit.
 
Thanks guys ill get in touch with porsche.... yea jeff i got 2 year warranty when i purchased it i,ll get them to check it i just thought id ask on hear first just to make sure its not me being over picky and its normal
