Gauges

Hi all,
I am looking to fit some aftermarket gauges to the car as I have problems with the standard ones.

1. Boost gauge - maybe not accurate enough.
2. temp gauge, throws a wobbly now and again and scares the pants off me, I have had a new temp sender installed but still tends to go right up into the edge of the red at times then drops suddenly to where it should be.[8|]

I have also thought about a vacuum gauge so that leaks can be detected - is it actually possible to measure the vacuum or even worth it on this car.

What are the most suitable gauges to buy and complement the interior.
I have thought of pillar mounted or wondered wether Flaming Eye could manufacture a heads up display sort [:D]

What are the other types that should be considered.

Thanks in advance
Jason

You can get a boost/vacuum gauge in one, they do the same thing after all, you just want one that reads negative boost.

I have a VDO boost gauge still to fit (that I bought at the Autosport show 3 years ago []) and it is a black face with a red needle and white lettering that lights up yellowy white - just like the dash in other words.

I've replaced my dash with ocean blue Flaming Eye kit

www.Autometer.com do a comprehensive range of auxilliary gauges in many different styles to suit your personality (or blinganality if you like [:D] ). The cheapest supplier I have found in the UK is www.vwspeedshop.co.uk which is where I got my vacuum/boost gauge.

For two gauges you could consider an A-pillar pod which keeps them in the line of sight or a blanking plate over the cubby under your radio. A few places (like Lindsey) sell a plate with two or even three pre drilled holes. I've got mine in a 968 cubby instead of the clock, but 968 cubbys are hard to find (apart from at a German OPC)

When first started from cold and at idle, mine reads 10 hg As the car warms up and the rings make a good seal this rises to 16hg.

As you drive along at a steady throttle it hovers around zero, but reacts every time you press or lift the throttle. If you lift off totally at a reasonable speed it reads 20hg on the overrun. Its quite mesmerising really [:D]

Paul,
Could you tell me were to got your matts from? They look really nice and need to change mine.[:)]

Sorry, they were with the car when I got it so I'm not certain. My S2 has autostyle ones and they are very, very similar in quality and construction so could be one in the same. I got them from Prestige Parts, made to order for £80 and have lasted well for over 6 years

Paul, what happens to the reading if you disconnect a vacuum line from the dump valve for example or manifold?

Was this a silly question?? [8|]

Not at all. I was planning on unplugging mine for the drive home last night so I could tell you definitively. Unfortunately, the head gasket blew, a piston melted, the crankshaft snapped and I had to wait for the AA all night so couldn't post.

Actually I just forgot to do the test [:)]

A pure guess is that you will lose a few psi when boosting and have less of a vacuum when coasting as there is a leak in the system. An accurate gauge is very useful for diagnosing boost/vacuum problems.

To me that would look too modern in the car, I have gone for an AEM analouge afr and boost gauge as the are vaguely similar to the original dials.

Those look very nice . I was looking just yesterday at Plx multigauges because i would like to add a wideband afr but i don't like to have extra gauges placed anywhere else than the instrument cluster.
The solution is this

The 1.5" display from Zada looks even more tempting for this application ,thanks for posting that .Zada 1.5"

Knocklink in the binnacle, oil temperature, or combined temperature/pressure if you can get an electric one, and AFR Id say.
