Had a (original 1983) fuel pump fail couple weeks back.
New Bosch Fuel Pump purchased and now fitted and car running fine once again.
The question relates to the "tank drain plug & Fuel Filter"
Being methodical I thought better inspect / clean the filter whilst the tank was drained for fuel pump renewal.
After a great struggle removing the steel hex drain plug nut and soft alum crush sealing washer from the bottom of the tank
(24" pipe Wrench and 1.5m 3" steel heating pipe!!! Yes it was Bl@@dy tight,
I noticed there was NO FUEL FILTER ELEMENT fitted to the drain plug??
Sure I saw in many spares suppliers pages that the plug should be brass?(mine was steel) that there should be a nylon washable filter inserted onto the drain plug?(none fitted)
I do know the car had a new tank fitted by previous owner of 32 years about 9 years ago , no mention of the Brand of tank which might have helped answer my query!
So tonight I searched the internet high and low to see what is inside the tank and just how the filter (if I had one) works.
Hey Presto I find a thread on a spares page where a car owner had cut open his old tank and exposed the magic from within.
His photos showed a red/brown plastic / Bakelite "Swirl Pot" in the base of the tank and both the outlet pipe (to fuel pump) and Return pipe from rear CIS K-Jet Injection are connected into this pot.
Curiosity got the better of me so I removed the fuel level Sender Unit from my own tank tonight , shone a torch into the half filled tank and find,,,,,,, No Swirl Pot? ,,,,,,, the two fuel pipes terminating inside a (guessing) 100mm diameter "biscuit tin with no lid" I can look right into this enclosure / ring , see the drain plug in the centre
(and no filter rattling around the base of the tank?
so contrary to all the spares pages , can anyone confirm there are SC cars out there with tanks that have no provision for a tank filter , likely have a steel hex drain plug (not brass socket) plus no swirl pots fitted internally??
