FUEL SENDER UNIT / FUEL GAUGE

Hi all

I have a 1983 2.5 944 ( early 924 dash etc. ), my fuel gauge is inaccurate it never drops below 1/4 but the amber low fuel warning light does come on and I have ran out of fuel in the past. I have to rely on the amber light but want it to be correct. Would it be the instrument or the sender unit. How do you test the sender unit ? Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.
