Front Tyre Wear

I've had my 2001 S a year now and just had a service where the OPC has presented me with the tyre inspection report showing the figures below. Along with the recommendation that the tyres (P Zeros) require changing. Obviously they are no longer ideal and should be changed, but with 4.5mm left in the centre I feel a bit cheated.

My concerns are: Is this wear pattern normal or do you think a geometry check is required?
  • LHF tyre... inside = 1.48mm - middle = 4.54mm - outside = 3.76mm
  • RHF tyre... inside = 2.06mm - middle = 4.62mm - outside = 3.63mm
Is it normal for the insides to wear this much? Can anyone advise please.

Bob.

Mine do but I have the car set up for track use - that is max negative camber all around with all four wheels dead ahead.

These settings make the car much more responsive but if you feel you don't need this have your alignment checked and reset to the factory defaults if needed.

Hi Oxtailsoup (where did that name come from?)
I've done 9000 miles on them, but they were put on my car from another at the OPC, so I've no idea how many they had done before that.
And that's part of the resaon why I'm wondering about whether to get the geometry checked. I dont recall uneven wear when I bought the car.
Whilst I think about it the car has always been bad for 'tramlining' or following undulations in the road if that's what it is still called. My old 944 was like that 10 years ago so I presumed it was normal, but is it? Do they all do it?

I'd say they all tramline a bit more than 'normal cars' because of the wide tyres that fit very snuggly into the wheel ruts in the tarmac caused by lorries.

The wear pattern of more wear at the edges suggests under-inflation but the increased wear on the inner edges might be alignment in addition, but hen it could have been set up for track days as John suggested

My fronts have just been replaced after 8000 miles, although I must say that this has been after 2 very spirited track days.
The NS tyre leading edge had just started to shred, whilst the OF leading edge is ok - both fronts have about 3-4mm across the centre.

So both had to be changed, especially as I'm off to the 'ring tomorrow.

At my last trackday at Brands, the instructor told me I was carrying too much speed into the corners and will only wear my tyres out quicker.

Oh, how much he said was true [8|]
