Front suspension and strut problems

Hi Folks,

well miracle of miracles she passed here mot today.

The only advisory to deal with is the mention of "slight movement" toward top of both front suspension struts.

Any thoughts what that could be I had a wiggle and can't feel much.

I did notice on the way home the occasional clunk which felt around my right foot sort of direction, think that is in the general area of the wish bone mount?

Hi there, this would suggest the strut mounts - replacement options and cost depend on 944 model and suspension plans :)

Mine was making a few noises and ended up being the nut that fastens the shock it to the top mount wasn't tightened 100%, bit of a pain trying to tighten it when you need an Allen key in the top of the strut and then tighten the nut, but managed and now it is so quiet.

Although when fully extended the struts often have some play between the body section and the damper rod.

thanks, I will check the tightness asap.

Trying to check the suspension if I push the pass side wing up and down a lot quickly it settles quite quickly. On doing the same thing to the drivers side it is quite stiff and need a fair bit of resistance just to push up and down a few times?

I wonder if the clunk front the drivers side is the fact the shock is't absorbing the bumps?

The shocker should allow one rebound and one settle then stop if in perfect condition. The fact that your nearside seems to continue past this, is an indication to me that something is amiss with the nearside and I wouldn't be surprised if the car feels a bit vague and unbalanced in high speed bends. On the other hand the drivers side might not be compressing because the ball-joint on the end of the wishbone is stiff or so badly worn that it is binding, and the clonk is coming form the ball joint moving in the arm. Other than that check the anti roll bar bushes and the ends of the anti roll bar itself to see if it is loose in the bush, or compress the suspension with the bonnet up to see if the play in the strut top bush is the cause of the clonk; not that I m an expert on 944 suspension, but new shocks all round cured the feeling that my 924T was about to turn turtle.
