My speakers are old and crackly, too much of ACDCs 'you shook me all night long' i believe, can anyone suggest some nice replacements?

I picked up a pair of new Alpine 6x4's for £25, they sound fine as far as 6x4's go. If you want to go bigger it is possible to install 6.5" round speakers if you nibble some of the inner door skin away! This would count as lightening your vehicle if the weight of the new speakers didn't weigh more than the scrap metal![:D] Stuart

I have the 'upgraded' 6 by fours in my car and the stereo still sounds completely c*** if you want that 80's retro ping sound I have it [&:] I'm not an ICE man and only occasionally listen to a CD (80's of course) but it may be because I am used to the bog standard fit 10 speeker 300 watt system in the Volvo D5SE which sounds awesome. I suspect I need to change the Sony head unit as well as put some decent speakers in the back but its a job way down the line of importance for me. Have a listen to mine when I see you and we can compare who has the cr****t sounds [;)] Regards Mas

I bought some of the JBL (I think) 2-way speakers that are the recommended replacements for my S2, when the (original-fit, I suspect) speakers in there packed up. It was an improvement on standard, but still sounds lousy. Worse than I think they should, given that the head unit is OK and it has a good quality amp. I suspect that the fitting is poor (they didn't fit, so I made some spacer rings in a bit of a rush), but despite having tried to sort it out there was no improvement. Actually, it's perhaps a job I could tackle this weekend. Thanks for the idea! Oli.

Unfortunately there is a restricted choice of 6x4s on the market nowadays, as it is not a very popular speaker size. I also have the JBL 6x4s in my doors, and the sound, although not brilliant, is quite decent. One day I will get around to making some custom panels for the boot to fit some decent rear speakers and a sub.

Oli - you should be coming up to Rutland this weekend! Mike PS - I only have the radio on for the traffic news

Yes I got JBL's for my old car, not sure they were much better than the originals tbh but certainly better if those originals are shot and not that expensive via fleabay iirc. Current car has the 10 speaker option which didn't sound that great until I fitted a Becker Grand Prix head unit and was subsequently pretty amazed as to how nice they sound now, lovely tone.

I got two pairs of Pioneer 6x4 three way speakers, screw in fit and lovely sound (I have a Pioneer head unit to go with them too). Got them off[link=http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_8560_Pioneer+TS-A4672R.html] this crowd [/link]about 2 years ago, don't make the same mistake I made with the head unit though, I can't get any radio stations over here! CD and MP3 sounds great though, I highly recommend those Pioneer speakers, there aren't many other companies doing three way 6x4's.

You can fit larger speakers in the rear of later cars. If you take the rear quarter trim off then youll see that theres a removable panel (removed fo the the Nokia 10 speaker cars). When you take this out a larger round speaker can be fitted (from memory).

Simon, You're right. There are some 'photos on t'interweb somewhere ... I'm sure google is your friend. Oli.

Hmm, my future install should be 'interesting'. Genesis Amplifiers, 3" mids in the front door, and 6.5" midbass units in the rear with a little time alignment too. It won't sound fantastic but alot better than what's in there.
