Front pad alignment..really?

Hi..
just looking through my manual ready to re-assemble front brakes and came across this....

Is this really neccessary?

Does everyone do this?

I've never done it on other cars with single pot sliding calipers but it makes sense. You want the piston to provide more force on one side of the pad to stop it rattling and squeaking so the pressure is progressively applied as the disk sweeps through the pads. On 4-pot monoblock calipers this is achieved by having pistons with different diameters.
