Front indicators

Hi all,

I've got what I think is a wiring problem with my front OS indicator; very possible as the whole lot was stripped and put back together. The rear, side and dash lamps all flash double-speed, with the front not working at all.

I've tried a new bulb, no difference and the old one looks fine anyway. Any obvious place to look?

Also, are the front lenses supposed to have a seal, there seems a lot of water lying in the unit. Although the bulb was dry it would certainly be getting splashed when the car was moving and the water sloshes around.

Check the fuse Paul. The wing mounted one and front ones are on a different circuit I think.

When the car was painted and the wing was repaired they probably took the front PU off. I'll bet the connector behind the bumper has come loose and not passing current to the bulb.Try looking behind the or even taking it off. It's not a big job ( just be careful of the lovely new paint) there are 2 connectors on each side clipped to the body check they are all connected properly. If not then it's probs the bulb holder in the indicator unit that needs a bit of a clean.

Front bulb has gone. If a bulb goes then the other ones on the circuit flash at double speed to let you know there's a fault.

I found this out when I tried to fit LED bulbs and the resistance wasn't high enough so caused this problem.

I'd have a look at the bulb holder - maybe a bit corroded? After that it's the wiring. I know in my turbo the wiring on one side was a bit dodgy - OK when it was hanging loose, but when you stuck it in the clip behind the PU it wouldn't work.

I don't think the indicators have a seal on them.

This is almost always a ground problem. a) the bulb is blown so no ground (through the filament) b) the socket is corroded so no ground (through the bulb base). This can be as little as enough corrosion to give the socket a little color without actually eating up the metal surface. c) a broken wire or corrosion on the ground connection for that part of the harness.

Got in the car last night at the Gatwick Kart circuit, nearly midnight, to be told I had no rear lights at all. [&o]

Brake lights were fine, but no rears, or rear fogs (my first thought as to how to get home), and one front sidelight out as well.....great 54 mile drive home, with every car flashing us!

Had the rear lights refitted and sealed today, we were waiting for some proper sealing stuff. Turns out I had two connections on the front PU needing work, three bulbs popped, and two fuses blown. Taking a 23-year-old car to bits does seem to break a few things that were perfectly fine before. []

All credit to Rob at Classic and Custom Works, he refused any payment and wants me to come back if there are any further electrical gremlins.

Blimey that sounds a bit hairy! wouldn't be wanting another trip to the bodyshop after being rear ended!
Glad you got home ok, and all sorted now?
