Front calipers on rear

Apparently the front S2 brake calipers will fit on the rear axle. However I have been told this may affect brake bias as although pads are the same size pistons are larger on the front calipers. Was wondering if swapping the fronts to the rear would be a possible option when upgrading brakes to m030 at the front.

Anyone ever done this?

I believe this is the case with the S2 having different piston sozes to generate differemt efficiencies. The Turbo does it by use of a brake biassing valve and all the pistons are equal size. Can't comment about the S of course. That's how I understand it anyway.

S2 & '87-'91 951 rear calipers are the same, including '92-'95 968 as well. All S2's have brake biasing valve. It's attached to ABS pump.

I (like the others here) haven't done it but I would say it was possible assuming same mounting and fittings in same place. What you would find is the brake balance would be off - front to rear - as the rear brakes would have more friction than before with the bigger caliper pistons.

So it should come down to the brake biasing valve that controls fluid pressure front vs rear. If this is adjustable you may need to tweak it a bit - if not - you may need to change it out for an adjustable one. Not sure you could rely on the ABS system to do it for you []

Edd,

When I first got my 220T in 1997 I used to read message boards and forums about the car quite a bit. Your question came up back then.

People who were fitting big reds were wondering if putting their original front calipers onto the rear would improve matters. There was a lot of discussion, but nobody knew for sure.

Then some chaps from America came forward and they had tried just that mod, they confirmed that it was definitely not a good idea. The rear brakes became too powerful and would lock up before the fronts. The consensus opinion back then don't do it.

I TOTALY agree with the above comment.
Ive done just this same thing on my car , an under no circumstances should this be done. Well try it at your own peril......[;)][;)]
There is too much braking force at the back if the front calipers are fitted on there.
The standard front calipers have a larger piston size than the rears and this gives more braking force.
This was tested both on track and on the road...
Its not too bad in the dry, but in the wet the car would snap into oversteer VERY easily....

Edit to say, this was tested with both M030 front calipers fitted , then Big Reds...
The best way of biasing it out is with the correct bias proportioning valve.
