flat battery

my 86 oval dash car didn't have the post and had a cable operated key release, I would guess all cars with the post have a key that works a microswitch. The post should have a blue cover and is in the scuttle area near the black vacuum store cylinder.

The boot release is on the drivers side - opposite from the bonnet release on the rhd cars.
On my boot, the key operates the cable release cam mechanically, the switch operates the motor mounted near the o/s rear light which pulls a cable which operates the release cam!
I know on the S2 the key operates a switch with no mechanical connection.
Dont know when it changed.

Yes. 1989 model year cars onwards use miroswitch and have the terminal.

Whilst on the subject of batteries, does anyone use a ctek xs3600 charger? if so, have you noticed that if you have the charger on ice mode, it wont go into maintenance mode? ie the 'half' battery icon will flash, and the full battery light will be green.

I think Ice mode is for charging a depleted battery. If your car is in storage over winter just leave it in maintenance mode.

Ive been thinking about one of these battery consditioners. Who can tell me which is best?

I have an accumate which seems to work fine. I tend to alternate between this and a Maplin solar battery conditioner for the Caterham and the lawnmower this time of year.
So far so good.

I just disconnect the negative terminal when the car is not in use. 8 or 10 mil spanner. Job done! No more flat batteries!

I need the battery for the car alarm.

I have a solar pannel wich I connect sometimes.

Need to get a conditioner though

Better to fit quick release terminals... [;)]

Sadly I can't help re the ice light question. But re Petes question , I have a CTEK XS800 which is a basic one that I bought on Flea Bay for about 30 pounds all in.
It is like his one to look at but with less lights and no ice mode. There's a pic of one on my blog.

It does a good job and I would recommend it to anyone.

Cheers

I have the ctek zafir 90 which is exactly the same as yours, just double checked the manual to confirm what mine does. It is connected at the moment on ice mode, yellow light for charging is on initially but this then moves onto the green light for maintenance after a short period of time.

When I check on it it is sometimes on yellow charging mode before going back to maintenance mode so I can only assume that this is part of the cycling process.

FYI - mine was about £28 brand new from Costco, I think they still stock them so could check when I'm next in if anybody is interested or doesn't have a card.

Not really looking to get drawn into anything here. The yellow light should be extinguished when the green maintenance mode light is on. The OP stated that his yellow light is flashing.

None better than an Accumate in my view and experience.

I (and others) have been using these reliably for years without issue. Lots of accessories as required and they genuinely do recover deep discharged batteries you thought were dead and cycle and condition the battery on the car by direct or remote connection.

A mates ride on mower had a small Varta or Yuasu battery that had been dead for a year (he used the pull start) so I connected it to the Accumate and it took nearly 4 days but it brought it back to life admittedly a bit tired but still it worked - amazing.

I bought the wall bracket, extension lead and remote connectors so whatever car is in the garage the Accumate is always in position with a lead that will reach the car or a battery on the bench.

Glad it's sorted! I use the eyelet terminals with the connector poking out the side of the boot carpet. I really need to stick an I line fuse on there though for just in case.

Do it now please and as close to the positive terminal as you can.

A slight bit of chafing and your car is toast!

Why? my ctek doesn't have an inline fuse so what's the problem?

If you are simply connecting a conditioner/charger to a battery post and then removing it you are protected by the charger circuitry protection and also note the wires from the charger are immobile and not subject to movement and vibration ( I would assume the C-Tek has such circuitry protection - the Accumate does and it also protects against reverse polarity and sparks).

If on the other hand you have a permanent wire running through the car to a point where the battery charger occasionally connects onto it then if the wire (which is direct from the live terminal) shorts onto the car somewhere it tries to become a fuse but wont burn out. Instead it`ll immediately burn off all the insulation and get red hot and pretend its like a wire in a toaster or electric fire element (in seconds) and set your car on fire!!!

Hence ensure the in line fuse is, as I suggested earlier, "as close to the positive terminal as you can"

The ctek manual is useless, as it did not cover my fault scenario, which was caused by a bad ground connection on the car body. The ground crocodile clip had shifted and was no longer correctly earthed.

Scotty, I've had my Ctek 3600 for 2 years now and I always leave it in maintenance mode and let it do its thing. Tends to flick between fully charged icon and partly charged one - I have attached the cable to the battery terminal posts and leave the end peeping out from under the boot carpet, as I did with the 944 rather than use the crocodile clips. Not had any issues in the 2 years of use.

Not actually sure what the winter mode is for tbh.
