Fitting Plumbed-in Extinguisher - Carpeted Cabin

Does anyone have any experience of this? I havent ever fitted an extinguisher into a trimmed cabin before and I dont think that a pair of M8 flange bolts straight through will be the most sympathetic method...

Does anyone have any experience or ideas? I usually look at the Club GTI preparation forum when the Blue Book isnt giving me the answer that Im looking for, but they consider the dashpad to be excessive trim!

My car has an extinguisher mounted in a bracket in front of the passenger seat. It was pop riveted in but I found some holes the right spacing apart and used a tap and die set to thread them and then bolted through the carpet into the floor pan with some blue loctite on the threads.

Is this a for a hand held or a plumbed-in type Dave? This is a 4 litre twin chamber bottle that Im looking to mount and it needs to be longitudinal with the head forward and the rear to the seat (whichll be fixed all the way back).

Simon

The hand held has to be mounted within the drivers reach whilst strapped in, and Im hoping to use a Brey Kraus seat mount for that, under the drivers seat front.

Rollcage mounts arent really practical in a 944, although I will know better when the cage is fitted.

I have one of these unused (still in original packing in fact) if you are interested?
Bought it a few years ago as it was a condition of my then insurance cover for track days, but never got round to fitting it.

Simon - it's a hand held one so a lot smaller than yours. I'd pull the carpet back and have a good look at the floor pan to see what bolt/screw combo would work bet for you. Not sure the top skin of the floor pan would be thick enough to bolt such a big tank too, probs best bolting all the way through with some rubber gaskets.

Thanks Steve, but I have one off my old series one car - looks like Jim will take it though.

could you mount a bracket off the rear seat belt mounts on the tunnel?

The whole thing is 12" (15" inc the head) long and 7" in diameter and weighs well over 10lbs, so it needs to be mounted on the cabin floor. Also: I have a 968CS rear seat, which Id be reluctant to cut...[:D]

It was riveted into the last car Dave! I think I will have to wait until the carpet is up before deciding whether to just drill through or not.

fair enough! Was thinking a fairly substantial bracket bent over the tunnel, coming forwards, maybe fixed under the cassette holder. As you say won't work too well with the 968 shelf and better lower down anyway.

Better in the footwell to keep the hoses as short as possible too Tony. Speaking of hoses, Im thinking about mounting the bottle transversely now, because this will make it easier to keep them both out of harms way on the transmission tunnel.

How about folding the flap of carpet that covers the ecu back and fitting a bracket between the floor in that area and the front seat front fixings?

Sorry, should have come back to this sooner.

So do you want the BK bracket Simon? I can take a pic if you like, to make sure it is the right one. It is for seats with manual adjustment fore and aft.

I would like to take it please. I tried to email you but I now understand that the email/PM system has had a turn. Ive been playing around with my existing mount and my old series one car in the garage and I believe that its the wrong model, so hopefully this will allow a manual seat to move fore and aft when its fitted (which my current bracket doesnt).

Simon

Hi Simon. I have received your email. just going out for a bit but will email you back later. Sounds like mine is the right bracket but will double check to be sure
