Fit Turbo Engine Into Which - 924S or 944 Series II?

Stick it in the 924 and if funds allow get some Carrera GT wing extensions ( i know where some are available) it would be very light and quite "lively"....go for it !
 
A 924S is essentially just a narrow bodied 944. Yes some head scratching in certain areas but all very doable. If you also have a full 944T shell to hand some things will make things easier. Cut off the front end of the 944 and weld it onto the 924S so mounting the intercooler and 944 rad will be much easier. I did this with my 924 turbo so I could fit the 944T IC.

I am a massive fan of the 924 CGT, however, I would much prefer to see a narrow body conversion. You'll end up spending £2k on buying, fitting and painting the CGT panels. Use this cash to get the mechanicals spot on. You can get 7 and 8'' wheels under the narrow arches anyway with a bit of rolling. That will give you enough mechanical grip, especially with some Gaz Golds or similar. It will eat the heavier 944's and 968's not to mention 911's on track.

A must do project. Something that has been discussed on the 924 owners club forum several times but no one has as yet set about doing it. This is a heart ruling the head project and future value of this frankencar has no place in the equation. I could have bought a 968CS with what I have invested in my 924T, but there is more satisfaction in building something over buying it off the shelf.
 
Steve, I thought that you simply ground away the 931s nose until the 951 intercooler fitted (as per the link you gave me)? Alasdair has offered me the angine as a front cut which is great, but Im struggling for sapce. Hopefully I will have found somewhere to keep it all before delivery time.

Its all about power to weight.

I must assume you are quite practical to be considering it, so......

Fuel lines and delivery are easy, 8mm copper, a flaring tool and odd lengths of flexible hose for final connections. Aftermarket pumps, reservoirs (to prevent fuel surge) and filters are all available at sensible prices

If you have a MIG welder then the odd bit of fabrication is not hard

Water lines and intercooler positions are the fun bit. Water lines via a mixture of silicon hose and joiners (there is a huge range of bends and taper available) I use `yorkshire` copper fittings to join or you can buy swaged joiners and cutting and shutting a bit of sheet steel and making up ally brackets etc is good fun and so rewarding when done.

Electrics is simply a matter of really really studying the ECU/engine loom. Basically you supply power to the ECU and find where it senses or triggers.

Cables are aftermarket or people will make them up readily

Suspension cant be rocket science, its MK1 Golf principles in 924 and 944 but better located and simple caliper adapters from VW and Audi mean you can uprate the brakes easily.

Thats my somewhat simplistic view and assumes a reasonable skill level however if you can get it to around (or under) 1000kg with 250bhp thats seriously quick. I am not an expert but have built/rebuilt cars and its the challenge thats fun. Finally, there`s nothing in the world in my view in cobbling together a load of parts from all sorts of cars and suppliers and starting it up, driving it and finding out that it all works, its a really satisfying feeling.

There`s nothing more fun in my view than a sub 1000kg 4 pot and if you fit the GT arches etc I`ll buy it off you no problem.

Thanks Paul. Disappointingly Im far stronger on theory than I am on practice. I have quite an impressive tool set, but it is very, very clean.

The job will be subbed to an able aquaintance.

In addtion to the above comments, one other thing occurred to me that may require consideration"¦

The last time I was daydreaming about fitting a 968 engine into my car, I seem to recall reading that Porsche changed both the shape of the bulkhead and the mounting position of the master cylinder. As part of the "˜85.5 update, the servo and ms were effectively moved up, back and to the right (when looking into the engine bay from the front of the car).

PET seems to back this up with different part numbers for the brake pedal.

I'm sure (with enough effort) it is possible to sort and it may not be an issue with the Turbo, but it certainly is for the large twin-chamber 968 manifold.

No, I had bought an S2/turbo from end and had it grated onto the front of my 924T when the paint was being done earlier this year.

Here you can see the silver front cross member section in its entirety. Allows proper FMIC and '44 radiator placement and looks fully OEM. Well it does now its fully painted up!!

Off Topic a bit.Sorry Carrera have you done anything refurb wise with your Fuchs, just got me some 7 & 8 x 16 with some kerb marks on one or two, been told not to diamond cut them ? apparently makes them weaker i would be looking to take minimal alloy off ?

Not yet. They do need a refurb but I have an engine rebuild which requires more urgency!! Several companies claim to refurb them to OEM look but as yet I haven't done much homework on how good or not they are.

Which car are they going on? They will look spot on either way.
 
The 220, they are 951 part numbers, i also have 17mm hubcentric spacers on the rear along with Fleisenger 7 mm shims on the front, the car is Kalahari Beige, i cannot work out a suitable centre colour ?
At present they are white.
 
Hey Frenchy. Did you know that you can send them back to fuchs who will refurb them for you.Probs a bit expensive but they would be worth it and you would know they had been done right.
Also 944 man I know the car that the engine came from as it belonged to a pal of mine.That is a good solid engine it ran faultlessly so youve got yourself a good one there. Get it in the 924 and youll have a proper wolf in sheeps clothing.
