Faulty Wipers

Ive developed a fault with my windscreen wipers
1989 cab 3.2
with the stalk in the off position, engine running for about 5 minuts the intermittent wipers come on , then a minute or so later the continuous wipers come on..moving the stalk up and down 0, on , 1 on, 2 on, 3 faster on.. no off ( or intermittent now).
turn the engine off fo 10 minutes or so, restart the car and the cycle start again...off wipers, intermittent the continuous without touching the stalk.

any ideas?

Please check the intermittent switch is off the round one up by the rev-counter, report back
