fan resistor thingy

To add to the continuing saga of my heater, now the fan only works on 4. I've used the search facility to find the answer to "why"...[&:]

Having located the resistor pack thing, how do I clean the contacts? I've tried a bit of fine wet & dry but there's not enough room to do much.

use a wire brush and just gently brush it, once all the rust and cr@p is out of the springs and such it may then work, make sure that the ignition is off first though!

Got a can of Wurth contact cleaner from RPM, will let you know how I get on....I hope you're all impressed by how I'm turning my hand to the mechanical side of things! [&:]

Yes, very impressed! On my S2, i have exactly the same problem and I temporarily got the fan speeds 0-3 working again by seperating the resitsance coils. The insulation seems to have broken down between the coils and I'm going to try and re-insulate by using a temperature resistant and hopefully non conducting, non flammable adhesive.

Exhaust paste seems a likely candidate.

I bought a loom for the heater from a breaker for £15, and after checking out the hassle in fitting it as a unit, snipped off the resistor and replaced my knackered resistor using spade terminals on the wires to connect it to the original loom. There`s a good diagram on the PET site that illustrates the components.
