Ex 996 C2 Owner

Dear all,
as the heading suggests I owned a 1998 Guards Red C2 back in 2003 (ish). I bought the car with 60k on the clock and sold it 4 (I think) years later with 140k on the clock. Deeply regret selling it. I really should have just put it in the garage as a weekend car and bought something else for everyday use.

In the meantime, I bought a 1976 914 back in 2011 and spent 9 years restoring it only never to drive it. Very pretty car and I spent a lot of money getting it in fabulous condition but driving wise it just feels too old for me and it's now sat for 2 years undercover.

I've decided to sell it and see if I can find another 1998 C2 996 which I know I would drive and would be happy to maintain and fettle.

If anyone has a 1998 C2 that they would consider parting with please let me know. I'm in no hurry to buy and happy to wait for the right car.

Hi Andrew,

Great story! The 996 is a fabulous car and I wholeheartedly understand you wanting it back.

Perhaps don’t limit yourself to just a ’98 C2, it’s been a long time, maybe you’d like something a little newer (2001+ 996) or a little different (Boxster ’S’?) Or a 997 etc.

Either way try and get one that’s had a Hartech engine rebuild to give you lots of trouble free motoring.

I did actually have a 2.9 2009 Boxster for a few years as well. I really liked it but there was something about the 996 that I enjoyed more. The cabin felt airier and I know the Boxster performs differently but I liked the way the 996 pootled about. It suited me better I think. I'm not looking for performance, I could try a new Cayman for that, I really liked the way the 996 engaged you when driving and told you everything you needed to know about the car and what it was doing on the road. The 996 was almost telepathic in the way you could adjust the steering with the smallest of inputs etc. You folks know all of that of course:)

It may be just misty eyed nostalgia. I admit that's very possible, actually very probable!

I will be selling my recently purchased Solid Black 1998 3.4 car in the next couple of weeks. I really wanted a Blue car and have sourced a cracker which i have just put a deposit on. The Black car is Manual , Sunroof, LSD. 110k on the clock. Ulez exempt. It needs some paint. Interior is Graphite Grey. looking for 17k. I will post some pictures in due course.

[FONT=calibri"]The car is registered in the United Kingdom and is MOT and Road tax-exempt (UK only).[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"]VIN is 4762902668. Vehicle number 2668 of 4100 was manufactured in 1976 and makes this car one of the very last 914’s to have been made. The odometer currently shows 43122 miles.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"]The engine number is GA003521. The engine has been fully rebuilt and has the benefit of a newly installed modern EFI system.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"]The car spent its life in California until it was imported to the UK as a restoration project in March 2011. The restoration took 9-years and cost approximately £49k. To date, the car has covered only 150 miles covered since completion.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Body repair work focussing on the battery tray area, notorious hellhole, driver’s side floor, front bonnet lip, front boot floor. A strengthening kit was also added at the time. Any cavities e.g. central tunnel and heater pipe tunnels were extensively treated with wax oil. The underside also is wax oil treated.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

[FONT=calibri"]The 2.0 litre flat-four engine was professionally rebuilt by Angus and his team at Greatworth Classics. Angus specialises in 914 and air-cooled 911’s. The cylinder heads were replaced with new heads modified to meet the original 914 specification (using VW bus heads as a base), a new FF73 cam was fitted along with new 96 mm Keith Black pistons making the engine 2056cc. Many other new parts were added in the process, a full list is available if required. In addition, I commissioned GWC to build and install a brand new fuel injection system using an Omex 600 ECU, new injectors etc. The EFI work along with engine rebuild, and general re-commissioning work with GWC totalled over £17k alone.
