everyday car

hi,
i am thinking of buying a 944 to be kept outside and used as an everyday car to be driven 3/4 days a week.
what do you think is the car capable or is it best suited to a sunday morning drive?

If you dont do enough miles to 'need' a diesel then why not ! .
They are more suited to being driven than being locked away thats for sure.
As long as its a well loocked after/prepared car it should be tough and reliable too.

Enjoy

Hello,
I did the same thing about 4 month ago. I have a 944s which I park out in the open and use as my oly car every day of the week. On my rare days off i do look after it but iv had no major issues so far. I guess it's the same with any car if you look after them well they will work well!
Hope this help!

Absolutely - I have used mine as my everyday driver for close to 3 years, no reason not to and provided you remember they are old cars and things will need replaced at times its not a problem, broke the 149,000 today as just come back from a 420 mile round trip to buy my second S2[:)]

I've had my car for over 14 years as a daily driver and my only car, it lives outside on the drive as I don't have a garage, although it's off the road just now that's from my choice to do some major upgrades. Porsche 944's are perfect daily drivers and if looked after will out live most of us so go for it, there are very few if any cars on the road that are as good, even today's models.

I think everyone's in agreement!

I've never owned another model of car. Only ever had 944s. The Turbo I have now lives outdoors (in Central Scotland!) and gets a car cover if the weather is spectacularly bad. I use it to get around the city a few days every week and I take it for massive hoons on a weekend. It's perfectly happy.

It most definitely is, but with the proviso that you look after it, keep it clean, wash salt off in winter, service regularly, etc. I've had my car kept on the road now for 4 years, only car, driven 4-5 days a week. Infact I would say a car used regularly is much less likely to have issues with rusty sills and other corrosion. You also get to know the car and can sort things out before they become an issue.

You have a budget in mind, any particular models you like?

If you need any more info, most on here are willing to help.

Good luck

Best is a bit subjective, but for £2K your looking at one of the 8v cars, maybe a 2.7 if you can find one. Budget at least another £1000 in first year of ownership, sometimes more. If its daily driver your after the torquey S2 is probably more suitable but you will need to increase your budget accordingly.

Wow, I even I didn't realise there were that many people using them as only car or daily for such a long term...

I cover about 30k miles per year, have done now for about 10 years. Now in an S2, but previously early dash 8v. I do keep the Turbo for sunny days... As others say, I reckon they have less issues for being driven, even if kept outside, than the "garage queens".

Tref.

I use mine as much as possible and is a great flexible drivers car which you can pootle about built up areas or have fun on open roads.I have only driven an S2 which is very torquey which makes it an easy driving car for every day use.
They do cost money to run and unless you pay alot for one you can easily spend on average £1 - £1.5k/a to maintain.Costly jobs are belts/rollers etc , clutch , suspension , brake discs/calipers , sill repairs they all need these items done at some stage.
Go for one which has had major items replaced and documents to support.Unless you are very good mechanically cheapest way to get a good 944.If you go for one with ABS check it works( no warning light isn't proof there are cars out there with the warning light wired out so off all time ! )Can be very expensive to repair.
Good luck in your hunt.

I agree with everything said. You have to keep them mechanically fit which will cost more than a Fiesta but washed regularly especially underneath, they are a lot more fun than a Clio or Fiesta or all the other £2k to £3k everdays. But and its a big but, find one that has had a lot of money already spent on it, new sills and belts a must.

My 1985 944 Lux is kept in the road outside my house and I use it regularly. As has been said, with decent maintenance this shouldn't be a problem at all.

thanks for the replies, better go and drive one check that i like it,although i am sure i will

All I can say to that is 'better take your wallet' as for sure, once you've driven a 944 no matter what model it is you'll not want to leave without it...:)
