European Tour

Don't know if this is a dumb question, asked it on rennlist & didn't have a single reply[&o]

Anyway here goes....

In July we are setting off for a European tour in our 83 SC.

We are planning on doing around 2500 miles & hope to take in a visit to the Nürburgring, Monaco & probably a stop in Paris on the way home.

My question is, what should I do to the 911 before I go. I'm having it serviced in the next week or two & I have European breakdown cover but has anybody got any tips for this kind of long trip with an aged car?

Any spares or special tools (apart from a normal toolkit) I should take?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, If it were me taking my car (and I wish I was!), I would definately take some extra oil (as mine uses a little sometimes)[:'(]

If the car has a service before you go, and you are aware of any niggling problems you might have (you'll know your own car best for that!) you shouldn't really have any more problems than in a modern car.

I think for european travel you are supposed to take a spare bulb kit, warning triangle & first aid kit (but I am not totally sure).

Hi Doug,

The only answer is just check the normal stuff you would do on any car before a big trip. Just because your car is old does not make it unreliable, SC's are generally bulletproof.

I picked my car up in April and have done almost 3,000 miles in it now including a trip from south of France to Northants on collection, hasn't missed a beat and hasn't even used any oil, though fuel gauge has packed up (probably a connection somewhere).

What to check - I would check levels after your big service, oil hoses for leaks, belts all good, tyres no cracks/bits stuck in the tread that might cause problems, no slow punctures, compressor is working for spare just in case, pack a fire extinguisher, emergency triangle and set of spare bulbs as they are law in France and you will be done if you break down and you don't have them. Bring spare fuses and rudimentary tools including some decent pliers/screwdrivers, jump leads, tow rope, some more oil and some windscreen washer additive. That's about all I can think of off the top of my head but I'm sure there will be other ideas from rest of the guys.

Don't forget your dips have to go the other way and Spain now requires car drivers to carry reflective vests, food for thought maybe (not that you are going there but it isn't a bad idea, they take up no room).

I'm sure the car will be fine, they are a brilliant piece of kit. Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks guys, one or two things there I hadn't thought of. We're really looking forward to the trip especially the Nürbergring where we are booked in for two nights at the Hotel An Der Nordschleife right on the circuit.
Gives us a day to have some fun round the Ring a few times[;)]
 
Check your jack and that you know how to use it and whilst you are at it, that you can get all of the wheel nuts off with the brace in the tool roll.
Take your car's handbook to refer to.
Make sure your pump works and also worth inflating the spare tyre as a test.

Leave your radar detector at home!

Ring isn't always open to the public worth checking in advance that it will be, in case you want to change the schedule a bit. Oil is a lot cheaper in France than here the hypermarket will have mobil 1 / castrol etc.

'Old Girl'? She's only 21 Doug, she's only just starting to get into her stride mate. I had to cover my one's ears there as she's a sexy little unwrinkled 21-year-old too. (Thankfully my other half is unaware of this site) [;)]
 
21-year-old left-hooker the only way to go Doug, my first choice too.
LHD is the way they were designed (and built) in the first place!
