Essential Tools for a Beginner?

Chris,

Looks fine to me. Says 3 inch height when lowered, so would fit under a 944. And claims a lifting weight of 2 tonnes, which is more than enough. Only snag is that the jack handle can only be used from directly behind; some trolley jacks can have the handle inserted from any direction.

Nonetheless, I'd go for it.

Oli.

Ah, that could be a problem. The area I will use it is a bit narrow so would ideally have the crank handle from the side. I'll do a bit more searching!

Hi Chris

I have a Halfords one used several times in the last 5 years with no problems got it from Halfords on Cowdray Ave.

2 tonne jack in storage case £38

Hi Andy

Is that this one? The FAQ says it has a lowered height of 6 inches, which I assume is low enough to fit under a 944. If it is, I think I might take a trip to get that and a torque wrench later in the week. Does the Halfords jack allow you to jack from different angles, such as 90 degrees to one side?

Chris,
I have that one - or rather I'm on my third, so its not great. I still find it gradually drops. And its too high to fit under the jacking point on the sills without lifting the body slightly.
I'd look elsewhere if I were you.

I have a 3 ton low entry thing from costco and its great. It isn't portable (very heavy!) but its almost a commercial thing. They come up on ebay (ARCAN one in red) and costs around £100. It is very good but not for confined spaces, although you can take half the handle off which helps. It is a vast improvement on the Halfords one but I appreciate its twice the price.

Chris,
no it is one of the other one's Cat. no. 644179-0 but it does not allow the handle to be used at different angles.
If you want I could bring it up for you to try?

Thanks Andy. My space is very limited, and the car sits a few centimetres lower than the ground on the side I have easy access too, so really I won't be able to use it until I get a bit of concreting done to raise the spot the car is parked. Annoying as I need to get under the car to start sorting out the important jobs. When done, I'd have to do a bit of shunting about to give me enough room for the other side too! Either way, the jack would have to go in at an angle because I've only got about 3 metres width to play with.

David, did Halfords sort you out with replacements for your broken ones? Is the advertised 6 inch clearance not enough for a standard 944 without raising the car first?

Chris,
I did get the first ones swapped without cost so they must have. Still don't rate it but it sems it wasn't the one recommended anyway.

this is what I have. They are cheaper at Costco - £90 I think assuming you, or someone else, can buy from costco without having the expense of joining.

Thats be my suggestion too. The aluminium low entry jack isnt available any longer and this is whats replaced it in Costcos range.

If you buy a torque wrench then make sure you always handle it with care.A torque wrench is only any good if it is calibrated properly and regularly. If you drop it or bump it you can put it off calibration. In our garage the rule is you take the wrench out of the box use it and put it back and then move to the next job.
