Engine rebuild or replacement?

Hi,

I'm new here, but need some advice! I have a 924 whhich is in great nick, although last year 2 of the cylinders went down and need it rebuilt or replaced. I am not a techinical person, so there is no chance of me doing it. I'm great at keeping it clean and waxing and so on but not the otherstuff. Any advice please? I live in St Albans, so near there would be ideal.

Getting a 924 engine rebuilt is a major undertaking to do it properly. I have done it so I know. It could, however just be a couple of burnt out valves which are giving poor results on two cylinders. 924 pistons, if still available are likely to be a shed load of dough. In 1992 when I rebuilt my engine they were £204+vat each, plus the piston ring, but luckily the engine shop that bored the block supplied a set of the same Mahle pistons with rings for £240 inclusive. A good barometer to prices and availablity is to google or yahoo 924 pistons and see what comes up. Unless you are emotionally attached to your 924 you might want to consider the economics of starting afresh with a better 924 in the first place. If you determined to keep your current 924, or you get stuck for an engine I have a running 924 that is good for the engine, transaxle and suspension and that's about all, as the cill on the drivers side has had it. You can have the lot for £300 and I will throw in some resealed front callipers, and a slightly modifed head with a performace cam. You will need to put shims under the cam followers to get the ideal tappet clearances, which should then liberate about 18 brake horsepower from any 924 engine if fitted. A head assembly complete, from Porscheshop is £750!

Wow...sounds perfect! Thanks...my mechanic will happily swap and engine over, and yes I love my 924 it's a grat car in general. Marlow is a sones throw awy as My inlaws live near there and I know the Checkers Inn in Fingest well

I have noted your reply. I will get back to you. It hasn't been started for a bit but I have no doubt it will fire up upon the application of some fresh volts. Please understand that there is no mot or tax so you would legally need to tow or trailer the car away. By the way it sits on some tidy Le Mans alloys, which I had refurbed maybe three years ago but they have a couple of winters on them if you know what I mean, and the tyres are half decent directional Avon Z1s 205/60 x 15. Give me a week or so to sort it, I am not exactly fully prepared.
