Engine fan runs continuously

Please could anybody advise. just noticed in the last couple of weeks that the engine fan on my 997 Gen 1 2005 carrera s cabriolet runs continuously. After driving for only 5 minutes from a cold start, the engine fan comes on and doesn’t stop until the car is switched off. The engine fan doesn’t run after the car is switched off. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

That doesn’t sound right to me, and quite the reverse of which should happen I would say. On my 987.2 Cayman, in hot weather the engine fan only seems to come on when the car is stationary with the engine switched off to lower the temperature of the engine compartment.

It sounds as though there’s a problem with the fan regulation. Best to run some Porsche-specific diagnostics to see if any error codes have been flagged-up.

I bought my 2009 997.1 C4S in 2014 when it was 5 years old.
I knew nothing about Porsches and thought that the fan whirring away all the time the engine was on, was because it was a high powered sports car and needed extra cooling, particularly as the oil temp was continuously at 110 deg C.
When I arrived home after a run out the fan would run continuously even after the engine was switched off until it had cooled down.
Long story short, the simple solution was that there was a twig stuck in the fan blade on one side of the car. The other side fan was over compensating. To get to the fans the inner wheel arches need to come off, you might be surprised what you find in there, as twigs, leaves, rubbish, etc does accumulate. Once the twig was removed the fan operated as normal and oil temp was a constant 90 degC. Good luck.

Unless I’m mistaken, I think Christopher is referring to the engine compartment cooling fan and not the radiator cooling fans in the nose of the car?

Thanks guys. Yes, I am referring to the engine fan. It always comes on after about 5 minutes of driving. And as soon as I turn the car off, the fan switches off. Also, now that this happened I have been monitoring my dashboard for any engine management lights, nothing has appeared, but what I have now noticed is that my water temperature gauge goes to the middle(80) within seconds of setting off. (even from an overnight cold start). I don’t know if this would be relevant to engine fan issue and it kicking in all most immediately after setting off.
 
Hi Christopher, Yes the same in my car, the water temp gauge goes up much quicker than the oil temp and sits constantly at 80 deg.
It never moves even if the car is driven hard, it's just a feature of this model..

If the temperature gauge is indicating the normal running temperature [80 deg C] almost immediately then it sounds as though a faulty coolant temperature sensor might be causing the problem if the engine compartment fan is also linked to the coolant temperature? I don’t know, but certainly it would be worth checking out.

Hi Christopher.
The 997 is the same as a 996 and the engine compartment sensor is located on the right had side of the engine, see below. this has been known to come loose from it's location and drop down, If not then odds on its faulty and easy to replace.
Part No 997 606 213 00.

Hi all. Really useful information and much appreciated. As I am not mechanically minded, I use an independent Porsche outlet about 70 miles from where I live. The obvious question is would my car get me there given this underlying issue? (I don’t ‘hard drive’ the car.) Thanks all.
 
Yes, that should not be any problem, have a quick look in the engine bay, it may have just moved out of position , its very easy to see and get at.

This might help Christopher. You’re looking at items 3 and 4, with 4 being the actual sensor and 3 its locating grommet.

If all’s well then you might want to think about contacting your specialist for advice about driving the car over to them for investigation, mentioning the apparently rogue temperature sensor in particular which I’d be more concerned about than the engine cooling fan issue. If the coolant level is OK and there are no signs of coolant leakage anywhere under the car then I’m sure that it would be alright to drive the car over to your specialist. Presumably you have breakdown cover???

Incidentally, you should be aware that the temperature gauge doesn’t necessarily indicate the true coolant temperature, just that it’s within an acceptable range. Porsche, like other manufacturers, do this to reduce driver anxiety!

It should be around green spot area , between 1st & 2nd intake. It looks like it’s in situ but hard to see from photo. if its there just order a new sensor simply unplugs.
