Engine deck fan stays on

I’ve a 997.1 4S and the engine fan comes on once it’s up to temperature and stays on constantly. If I park the car for an hour or so and start the engine the fan comes on straight away. This clearly isn’t right, has anyone had this problem and fixed it. I’ve changed the engine temperature sensor and it’s made no difference.

If it was a boxster or cayman I would suggest that the engine compartment temp sensor has become dislodged from its bracket and it likely resting on something that gets hot.

I assume the 997 has a similar setup but since the engine is the other way around I don’t know where that would be on a 911.

I would suggest getting it plugged into some diagnostics with Porsche smarts and see what the reading from that sensor is - if it’s not “sane” then a sensor or mounting fault seems likely.

Hi Alan,

If you’ve replaced the temperature sensor without success then clearly the problem lies elsewhere … a fan relay or control module maybe?🤔

As Paul suggests, running some appropriate Porsche diagnostics should flag-up the root cause of your problem.

I've ran the Porsche diagnostics and the fault reported was the temperature sensor, which has been replaced, and still the fan continues to run.

If you’re happy that the sensor is working, presumably the problem lies either with the sensor connector or wiring? Does the fan stop if you disconnect the sensor?
