Engine Cooling Fan Refurb

Hello all,
Just looking at some winter projects on the car and I reckon the cooling fan and shroud could do with a little attention. I bought some magic polish from Essential Styling last year but I rekon I'd perfer a more original look than a polished effect. I was thinking about a mild form of blast cleaning followed by re anodising or something similar. I don't want to be into polishing the fan on a regular basis to maintain the look of it, I'd rather be behind the wheel than head in the engine bay.
Has anybody been down this route ? Advice greatly recieved.......

I would suggest glass bead blasting and clear powder coating, although anodizing wouls be an interesting alternative
 
You'd get away with anodising the shroud (if you can find someone who would do it - let us know if you do) but the fan is magnesium so you'd need to think of something else for that.

Options for the fan appear to be paint or powder coat - everything else will require time on maintenance

Regarding powder coating... I have heard that because of the very fine clearance between the fan and the shroud, you will need to remove the coating from the edge of the blades.

There is a place in Silverstone that will re-finish your fan (via electro-coating) with a nice looking factory finish....If you want more details, then please mail Eddie Lowdel (he has posted on Region 10 recently)

Phil,

Am also interested in following simular route as my fan/shroud in poor state of appearance...would be interested in any progress and ease of removal? etc...
 
I reckon plating is the way to go if the magnesium will take it, I'll keep ypu all posted with any progress.

You can refurb the fan quickly and cheaply by having it bead blasted (don't let them shot blast it it's too intrusive and will give you a pitted finish). Then all you need to do is soak it in WD40 for a couple of days. It will then retain its natural colour and repel dirt. Did it on my engine when it was rebuilt and was told of this 'trick' by the blaster

Good afternoon Phil.

I do have the facilities to refurbish cooling fans, I use a coating called Zylan, which is a very hard durable Teflon based finish. The advantage of using this product is that it's surface is so slippery that the fan will remain clean for a long period of time without getting the usual black deposits on it from the belt or belts. It feels much like the inside of a frying pan to the touch unsurprisingly.

I can coat the fan and shroud in a number of different colours including black, red, silver (virtually factory finish), blue, yellow, but silver looks by far the best! The shroud is coated in the same material, in the attached images show a silver fan and black shroud.

This product is widely used in rally circles for suspension components and linkages as it can withstand the incredibly hard treatment of gravel stages.

The cost of complete refurbishment, assuming the fan & shroud are removed from the vehicle and the fan & shroud don't have an after market enamel finish on them (extremely difficult to blast off), is £95.00 and the turn around is about a week.

This price includes:

Fan bearing removal
Fan & shroud blasting & cleaning
Zylan coating and curing
Insured posting back to customer
