Engine and transmission mounts

Has anyone changed the engine mounts or transmissions mounts on their 944?

Is the only option to replace with new parts from Porsche or are there 'upgrades' available?

I'm considering changing both and am interested to hear feedback re what difference this made to the car.

If you can share the associated costs, that would be helpful too.
 
What year car? Turbo mounts superceded all models engine mounts, but series two cars have different gearbox mounts to series ones. Series one (1982-1985 model years) mounts are available from aftermarket suppliers, but series two mounts are dealer only, unless you are brave enough to fit a solid mount which can be bought for about £40 from the states.

I've done the engine mounts on my turbo, it's not a hugely expensive job (ISTR engine mounts are ~ £75 each and the gearbox mount = ~£100). The issue is it's very time consuming and hard work !

Clarks garage has a good write up of how to do it, basically it involves supporting the engine (either from below on the sump or above from an engine crane) and dropping the front cross member to allow space to wriggle out the old mounts.

To drop the crossmember you have to remove the steering shaft completely, give yourself slack in the PAS pipe system, drop the struts, and track control arms etc.

When I did the job on my car I found the most difficult bit was that the engine tended to twist slightly as I was 'hanging it' from above at a single point - Clarkes workshop beam that bridges across onto the wings.

If I was going to do it again I'd support it from underneath and spread the load across the sump with a large chunk of wood.

These are beautiful aluminium parts that gives you thee ability to adjust height of engine up to 10 mm. lower than standard and thus lowering centre of gravity.
I have bought these a while ago to put on to my 944 Turbo Cabrio but having already mounted a coilover kit and next week will replace most bushes to semi-solid alternatives I am now a little afraid that it will all together be to much for the ordinary road behaviour as I am using the car 95% on the road with the family and only the last 5% driving the wits out on the occasional track days :)

I can not inform how much they add to the harshness of the car as I have never mounted them - it is surely possible to put in some hard shore rubber on the engine mounts instead of 1 of the supplied shims to take out the worst of any vibrations and it will surely be more tolerable in a Coupe than on my Cabrio.
I am sure that if you search on Rennlist.com that you can find people writing their opinions on the difference the mounts make :)
