Electric seat wont work, but switch gives power..

Hi All,

I have a bizarre problem - my 944's electric seat wont work (its the type with 2 buttons, each go two ways). The seat will go down, but not up. I've had the seat out and powered it from a battery, but what i cant understand is that the switch is working, and power does seem to be going to be motor in the 'up' position, it just isnt spinning. I swapped the contacts and the motor span the other way with no problems and allowed me to lift the seat right up before installing it.
Is there a relay in the switch system which is causing this?

Thanks

Phil

Hi Phil,

Puzzling - I don't think there are relays, so the only thing I can come up with is an internal fault in the switch. I think the switch must be relatively complex as it has to switch both poles to get stop/up/down. You could try swapping the corresponding switch from the passenger seat to test it?
Good luck! - and do let us now how you get on...

Hi Phil,

I had a similar problem with the seat only going one way and it was indeed an internal fault in the switch. It was caused because one of the ball bearings inside the switch had come adrift. Take the main switch cover off and you can carefully pry the switch apart, but be careful as there are small springs, smaller ball bearings and a short metal rod which can all easily be lost as it comes apart. It's a good idea to place a plastic bag over it to catch anything. Probably worth cleaning the contacts while they are accessible. Getting it all back together with the seats in place can be tricky as the ball bearings need to be held in a horizontal position as you push the parts back together - some people have glued the ball bearings onto the springs or used grease, I replaced mine with map pins with the pin cut down to about a centimeter and a bit of blue tack in the spring to hold it.

I had this exact same problem with mine.It was a wire that had come off inside the big plug under the seat where it plugs into the loom. The Plugs can be opened up and inspected. It was just a broken solder joint. easy fix

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to play with the switch, or maybe put a little 2 way job under the swat which switches the wires round so i can at least flick that then use just the 'up' button on the chair!

On a side note, does anyone know about replacing dash earths? Ive got an D reg Oval dash and the guages are all over, i'm 100% its poor earth connections, but i dont know where the dash actually earths to?

Thanks
