Early 911 Suspension

Hi,
i'm looking to replace all suspension on my 2.2S (1970) but - as this is the only part of the car that has not been touched in my ownership (15 years) - I am unsure which manufacturer to go for. Does anyone have any views or opinions in terms of what suspension is best for the early cars.
My car is running on the original suspension and as i am replacing the rear torsion bars thought i should look at doing the suspension aswell.

Stuart, do you mean which shocks are best, or bushes etc?

Shock wise Bilstein are a good choice, although if you have an S you may want to use adjustable Koni's as these are closer to the original spec.
Bushes are rather application specific and a mixture of weltmeister (or other polybush manufacturer) and OEM bushes are the way to go

Let us know what you're looking to replace and I can give you a list (refurbished my entire front and rear suspension last year)

sorry - didn't make myself very clear - i am looking to replace shocks all round so after any preferences on which shocks to buy. I do the odd track day so i guess the Konis might be more appropiate in that case.

in the real world you're highly unlikely to actually take the time to adjust your shocks (maybe for track days) this is why I went for bilsteins, that and I liked the colour!

The decision will probably be based on what set up you already have, replacing the entire front strut is very expensive (and unnecessary unless it is bent) so you probably want to just get new inserts for the front. Take a look in your front wheel arch, is the strut red (Koni), yellow (Koni or Bilstein sport), green (Bilstein), blue (Boge) or black (Boge). I'd assume yours are Red, so I'd go with new koni inserts (Type911 sell them). The same colour codings apply to the rear shocks too, again Koni's were standard on the S I believe.

You might want to take a look at your suspension bushings, spring plates, ball joints, brake lines and steering rack "while you're in there" too

I also went for Bilstein Sport dampers. Still a very good ride but with excellent body control and quite at home on a track.

I have just changed my spring plate bushes, relatively straightforward job if a bit messy!
They looked original and were, shall we say, completely shot. It's not back together yet but I'm expecting much improved control of rear wheel location. I used the weltmeister rubber bushes and glued them onto the original plates.
