Drivers side window operating by itself!

I have Recently encountered this problem when opening the drivers door the window drops then moves up and down again repeatedly I tried the re-set procedures of holding up down for ten seconds but the problem still persists. I also find that holding down the drivers window switch triggers the rear near side (passenger) window open! Similarly doing the same with the passenger front window triggers the drivers side rear window! In addition,the side door lights fluctuate occasionally when this sporadic window opening/closing occurs. It’s baffling as I don’t know where to start looking for the reason, micro switches I guess but I believe there are two in either door. The passenger door seems error free though. Any ideas as to what could be the cause?

The window motor appears to be working OK Stuart, so it sounds as though it could be a window module or micro-switch-related issue. A lot of components are interrelated via the CAN bus electrical system, which probably accounts for the strange occurrences you’ve noted, and the system appears to be very sensitive to low voltages on the modern cars, so it’s important to keep the battery in tip-top condition and certainly on a battery conditioner if the car has little use.

Hi Jeff,
yes I was thinking it may be something to do with battery too as a while back it went flat but I've since had the car on charge via a conditioner
and have it on charge now.So far I just tried opening the door and holding the handle open and the movements stop! If I subsequently let go of it the movement starts up again[&o] So this maybe is pointing to the door handle microswitch. I shall try this out a few more times before I bite the bullet and order a new switch. It seems quite a complicated palava to get at the internals of the door and also disconnecting the battery is required c/o the airbag. If I do opt for this it will only be when the weathers better []

Can you elaborate on the reset process please as my drivers window is playing up since the recent frosts froze it in the up position once the door was open. Now, on releasing the handle on opening the door, it goes up again. Reading your post, the handle micro switch sounds the likely cause but I may as well try the reset.

Hi Simon,
As I understand it you have the door shut.
press the down switch until fully down and hold for around ten
/fifteen seconds. Repeat this (Hold button up) for winding window fully up and it should be reset.
I am still awaiting decent weather before I attempt fitting a new microswitch but I’m also considering replacing the battery as it’s probably quite old (can’t find a date on it) and maintained by trickle charge and it would be nice to have a guaranteed new battery to be honest but More pressingly I’ve an MOT coming up in a few weeks and anticipate other expenses so not committing limited funds just yet.

A little more insight into the window behaviour and thanks to Motorhead for the battery condition pointer, because I replaced the battery with a new Bosch one around two weeks ago and also have it on a Ctek conditioner and lo and behold no more funny business from the window! I hope I’m not tempting fete but it does indeed appear to be a feature of a dodgy battery so thanks again. Stuart.
