Drivers Side Door Glass

And another thing's gone wrong!

Shut the door a little too firmly when running late for work this morning, the window was half open, the window is now all over the drivers and passengers seat......

So, I've found this on ebay for about £37, is that a fair price for a window?

I'm in Colchester, does anyone know of anywhere not too far away that might have one?

Are these easy to replace? I haven't found anything on clarks website yet.

I've got a free one going, but I live in Chester.

Do you need it immediately???

Tom lives in Peterbro, could get it to him in a couple of weeks.

Gerry

I do need it fairly quickly as the car is parked outside. A monsoon cover arrived yesterday, was going to get the car cleaned tomorrow ready for the cover, but that won't happen now until I fit the new glass. If I get the one off ebay it will be a week to arrive, then I won't be able to fit it until the next weekend, so I'm looking at 2 weeks in that case, which is pretty much how quick you can get one to Peterborough! So yes, I am interested!

I've emailed the Coggeshall company to see if they have any glass just in case.

Chris

I have fitted my passenger glass recently, I am now an expert in doing so, but they are tricky until you know how.

You need the inside door card off. I see from your ebay link that the glass already has the metal bar along the bottom. It is important that this is in the correct place. Slide your glass into place, this is easy as there are channels on each side (part of the door), and tape the glass up at the top of the door so that the window is half open, so the glass does not drop while you work on it. You then need to get the 2 plastic rollers attached to the window regulator in the door onto the 2 brackets on the metal bar on the glass. To do so you'll need to completely unscrew the regulator, jiggle things around inside the door until they fit, then screw the regulator back up. Make sure you do not damage any of the 3 plastic rollers attached to the regulator otherwise you will be looking at having to buy a complete regulator (you can get the rollers on their own, but only from the US). This is why you need to unscrew the entire regulator, I tried forcing mine which shatterered one of the rollers. Test to make sure it works, then re-fit the door card. Job done!

Its probably a couple of hours job if it is the first time you have done it, but I recon I could do it in 45 mins now, probably still with some swearing. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything.

Thanks Phil, that's a great help.

I had an awesome quote from Porsche for a new window, £227, makes ebay look a bargain, and Gerry's offer even better!

Gerry, when do you think you can get it to Peterborough? Where abouts do you live, in case any of my colleagues are in your neck of the woods?

My tip would be that two of the bolts hold one of the guide roller channels in the door horizontally.

If you remove these bolts and the channel and then fit that one last, that way you can wiggle the other 3 rollers into place and then slide the removeable channel onto the roller at the end. There is a bit of adjustment in the bolt holes to help get it all lined up too.

If fitting it yourself which is reasonably easy / fiddly use plenty of masking tape over the door frame and stuck to both sides of the glass to keep the glass from dropping when unsupported, about half way open with the window position.
Slap some grease / lubricant on the guides and the winder mech whilst you are in there and a bit of cavity wax in the door would be good job done whilst in there.
Eldavo's tip also helps by loosening the guide, you will need an 8mm and 10mm socket and ratchet along with Pozidrive screwdrivers.
I would tend to keep an eye on the windscreen replacement monkeys as i bet they will never have done one of these before, if that is the route you choose to go down.

When a grit lorry smashed my drivers side glass on passing. I got a replacement fitted by a fitter. Maybe I got lucky but he did a good job, no damage. Didn't clean up ever peace off glass, leave some In the door. U could always remove the door card your self if you know more what your doing then them. Not really that hard.

And should mean your car is weather tight a lot quicker

I think that a fiver is more like it, than £37! I couldnt give drop glasses away in the nineteen nineties, and the cars are now worth one quarter as much, so I doubt that the value of a seldom needed part such as this has tripled.

give these guys a call, they will be a good guide on correct price

also, I would fix it yourself. There is quite a lot of pleasure knowing you have fixed it yourself, and it isn't that difficult, once you get into it.

I'd love to even find 1, none of the local breakers have a 944.

I've got both sides available, took them out when I put the Polycarbonate ones in, couldn't just smash them and the bin men won't take 'em. So there in the garage, taking up room.......

Should have the rear quarterlights available soon, Poly going in there too this winter.

I live just outside Chester.

Gerry

Elliot has plenty in, Porkaparts. Details in faqs.

Thanks Paul. I thought any stock they had was on their ebay shop, but clearly it's not! I've phoned, emailed and text them for quotes for a number of parts and hopefully will get a response soon. Their prices look good, so I hope to be using them a lot. They pointed me towards Berlyn Services for good value new parts too.

Thanks Gerry. I've messaged you separately about them. Peterborough to Colchester is about a 5 hour round trip, so if I can get them posted from Porkaparts for a reasonable price, this might be preferable.

I spent Saturday cleaning the glass out of the car, the door cavity sounds like a maraca at the moment though so I'll have plenty more cleaning to do when I come to fitting the glass. The car now has it's new Monsoon cover on, so at least the rain won't get in.

Berlyn Services are supplying a new fuel pressure regulator, £107.52 including postage. Hopefully it arrives by the weekend so I can fit it.

Porkaparts are supplying a fuel pump, fuel sender, oil pressure sender, drivers side door glass, passenger side lock components and a door speaker for £103 including postage (£106.70 once paypal took their charge). They will courier them tomorrow, so I might be very busy all weekend!

Door glass first, then fuel pressure regulator. I will leave the fuel pump and oil sender until last, so if the first 2 go well I will tackle the passenger door lock too. I've had the car since July, can't believe it's taken this long before I get to work on it.
