Driveline backlash

I seem to be getting a bit of backlash from the driveline when coming off/on the power.

It feels as if there is a gap between two parts so one starts spinning and then catches the other one rather than the two being joined together.

It does it when the car is in gear and on the move, motorway cruising is the worst as gentle on/off of the power isn't very gentle!

I'm thinking clutch inspection or driveshafts?

clutch rubber donut, drive shaft would give you a clacking sound that increases with road speed.

This would have been my only answer a year or two ago, but increasingly series two cars gearbox mounts are coming apart. If its the clutch then the transaxle will have to come out - Id get as far as this dismantling before buying a new clutch, as theres a fair chance that it wont be needed...

Does the car ever become difficult to put into gear whilst driving - cornering particularly?

An aside Dave: I turned the television on yesterday and Im sure that I saw the mental cat woman from your dodgy television programme, on a 'guest house proprietors bitch about each other' programme!

just had this on my own 944, it was both clutch & gearbox mount, both goosed, be warned of a hefty bill though, £550 for the clutch & £153 for the genuine mount, dont think there are after market ones available unless they are a welded fixed mount ?, Jinxy

No probs when cornering or choosing gear. Clutch rubber donut was my first thought too, seen that Jasmine Porschalink will do a clutch for £600 fitted so will head there methinks! Car has 75k miles on so about due a clutch.

Crazy cat lady had done "4 in a bed" the B&B programme previously and came last on that too!!!

If they can fit a clutch for £600 then Id go there, as you wont be comitted to the clutch if it turns out to be the mount.

Will have a neb through the clutch inspection hole when I fit this new belt.

Had convinced myself it felt like the clutch so will check the mount too, thanks for the advice!

I had this and it was just the gearbox mount as my clutch was already the spring type.

A cheap solution is to pack the mount with liquid urethane. If it is the mount that's causing the problem you have cured it, and can swap the mount out at a later date if you wish.
If you still get the backlash you can be pretty sure its not the mount and have saved yourself over £120.

I used this stuff http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U-pol-Tiger-Seal-Pu-Adhesive-Sealant-Black-Tigerseal-/110822397021?pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item19cd87945d

and here is a guide http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/681532-urethane-transmission-mount-the-s14kev-mount-tutorial.html

IIRC it is inherently fine to drive with the donut munched?

I seem to recall that any bits that could get damaged get replaced anyway? Not planning huge trips but got R3s annual show to go too on Sunday and then a probable trip to Lancashire to get the clutch done.

Have you not succumbed to the draw of BBBBOOOOOSSSSTTTTTT Dave? I can part ex your 2.7 against a Turbo?
