Downpipe group buy

For guys not on rennlist, I have ordered one of the Fabspeed downpipes. Seems good value for money if anyone is after one. Hayward and Scott quoted me £325 + Vat and this is $225 + $84 shipping

I did see it on there. Is that $84 shipping to us in the UK ? Is this 3" I take it ? welded bung for a wideband ?

Tempting..........

Yes it's 2.75." I don't see how anyone can do one bigger than that as the spacing of the bolts would be very tight

Fabspeed have sold me two exhausts and they turn up really quick, great to deal with.

It can be done Sandy, but its tricky. I made a Jig for the OE Part and did it that way in Stainless with purge TIG weld.
3" or 76.2mm OD with a 1.5mm wall. The bore is 73.2 mm from about 40mm into the D/P to the back bumper [:)]
Don't ask me what it would cost commercially
Its both A a challenge, and B a labour of love..

The Hayward & Scott is a full 3".

Worth the difference, particularly if you are going for a 3" exhaust.

Graham,
the H&S is 3" but if you look at the inlet end in the image there is a 3" opening which creates a diameter change from about 60mm from memory to 73mm (assuming a KKK Hotside).
I took the time rightly or wrongly to produce a flared portion of pipe which removes this step. It also overcomes the challenge around the bolt holes, I don't think their pipe will accommodate a ring spanner or socket on the fixing bolts as the full 3" diameter is too big to allow it. They have welded up to that point with filler wire, but welded the bolt hole area without.
If I was advising them, it would be to spend the time allocated to polishing on the addition of a taper section. On the other hand, assuming it is accurate to the OE mountings, it is very good value.
No doubt it will make a significant difference to engine breathing and performance.
Did it fit easily...[:D] no, seriously they are inaccessible at best, but did the bolts line up and it clear everything?

I ordered a Fabspeed unit, I paid $300 (225 + 75 shipping fees to France) and got it yesterday.

It looks well made, the welding is very nice and cooper gaskets come with the downpipe.

I know what you mean - the outlet in the turbo hotside is much less than 3". I did go through this with H&S but their view is that the instantly opening up to 3" will not be causing anywhere near enough turbulance to outweigh the benefits of letting the gas expand as quickly as possilble at that point. The extra work in tapering the pipe doesn't seem worthwhile.

I don't remember that being a problem - but bear in mind you will be fitting the DP to the turbo off the car anyway...

[:D][:D][:D] I know what you mean.

It fitted ok and all the bolts lined up etc. It was tight but that could have been due to the different (much bigger) turbo.

It's pretty big when wrapped!

Graham, nice looking turbo, is that a Simon Peckham one? I am collecting bits for my 3.0 build and will need to decide on a turbo. Like the sound of the sp turbo as it is roller bearing and bolts straight on.

£300+ seems very expensive for such a short downpipe.

At what sort of flywheel horsepower does the difference bwteen 2.75" and 3" become apparent?

Graham, is the inner diameter on your H&S 3" downpipe indeed 3"?

My Lindsey "3 inch" downpipe actually has an inner diameter of 2.75".
Since it already touches the heatshield somehow, I wonder how a genuine 3" inner diameter downpipe could fit?

Yes it is.

It's a great turbo, although very expensive as it's pretty much custom made - I've just bought 2 Garrett GT ball bearing turbos for my new car for not much more than that one - but Simon's knowledge in getting the right spec is worth paying for. And yes, it pretty much bolted straight on - although I did mod the water feed and had to grind a few bits down to make it fit nicely.

Don't know - but you don't want to do it twice.

2.75" is probably fine - but if you are going to fit a 3" exhaust then why fit a 2.75" down pipe?

I see your point. I was look to learn though, as opposed to the more common forum behaviour: trying to be clever [:D]

When I last owned a 944 Turbo there was no enhancement at all - you just took it as it was, so Im not as familiar as I am with other aspects of the cars. From my experience with turbocharged Imprezas though, Id expect horsepower to be well North of 400bhp before the 'restriction' made any difference at all.

Yes I think it is for the most part and it doesn't touch the heat shield - the bend in the pipe takes care of that.

The tightest bit is where it attaches to the front section of the main exhaust - not much room there at all and it required the subtle use of a lump hammer....

Graham,
you are probably right about the bit of turbulence making no difference, just at the time the only avail 3" DP was a poor one from the states, and I thought it should be blended.
Just looking at the cold side, your image looks errrrrr generous[:D]
What boost delivery are you seeing?
My BB setup produces about 1 psi at 1700rpm, and 5psi very shortly after 2000rpm. I would need to do a 3rd gear run to profile it exactly.
Reason I mention is the DP mod really improves this, also the Intercooler - LR stg 1
