Door Water Leak

And another question. I recently noticed that the carpet-like material below the speaker housing on my driver's side door panel was wet. After removing the panel I lifted back the foam waterproofing membrane (which seems to have been off a couple of times before judging by the condition of it) and found a mouldy white translucent self-adhesive sheet. The cabling behind it was wet which had rotted the cable wrap, but there was a drop of water on the metal door skin just above it - see the photo. I haven't seen any evidence of water coming in before.
So, my questions to everyone is:
1/ where is the water coming in?
2/ Is the white sheet original on a 2003 986 or has it been added since by someone else trying to sort the same water ingress issue?
I hope some of you may be able to help sort this issue prior to me fitting the membrane in place. TIA
