Door swap this weekend! Any helpful tips?

Hi All,

As this is a brilliant forum I thought I would ask for advice. My 944 has a broken door lock; Well actually door. The previous owner had an attempted break in to the drivers door. He replaced (very badly) the door handle but the door is badly damaged around the handle and the handle keeps coming away from the door and doesn't lock properly. So I have found and had delivered a second hand 944 door in the same colour (only £43 incl. delivery! But I haven't unpacked it yet...). My plan this weekend, after the Rugby, is to strip down the drivers door and transfer everything over to the new one.

Has anyone done this and is there any helpful advice on achieving the said task?

Should be pretty straightforward, drivers side wiring connects with various connectors around the boot switch and the hinges and strap are obvious.

The doors themselves do have lots of bits (and weigh a ton!!) but its pretty obvious stuff. Work up from the bottom

There are 3 screws in the armrest and the armrest lifts off with the doorcard ( there is a hook from the top of the rest through the card into the shell)

If you have LED door pins make sure the wiring doesn't get caught.

Double jointed fingers thumbs and elbows are useful but not essential!

If it's the same as the 968, disconnect the door pins from the inner lock mechanism - the metal rod has a ball on the bottom end that push fits into a white plastic bit on the inner lock. That way you can take the pin out from the top without disturbing the wiring!

To get the inner lock out you need, as a minimum, to remove the rear guide rail for the window - but I guess you'll be taking everything out! Check the inner lock mechanism for wear while you've got access to it - mine was worn and not working properly, a brand new replacement inner lock from OPC is about £35-40 and worth doing while everything's in bits as it's a real swine to replace once everything's back together! I've also seen recommendations to replace the scraper seals while you're at it - but not sure what this means. Oh, and while you're at it, new seals for the door handle - they're cheap!
