Door Lock Question

Hi all

Now the sun is out and the snow is gone, I finally decided to try to fix the passenger side door lock.

The door will open from inside and out no problem. The door can be locked and unlocked using the inside lock push up thing. The only thing I can't do, is unlock/lock the door from outside. The key turns with little to no resistance in the barrel.

Elliott kindly sent me 3 plastic bits that can be used to repair the lock, but I have been unable to find any instructions on how to go about doing this. Does anyone have any links/info?

I'll post some photos shortly.

edit - photos now posted. Does this sound like something i can fix from the inside? I'm about to take the handle off to take a look from the outside.

You need to have a look to the rear of the locking motor to see which bit has come off or broken, my guess would be the one from the back of the tumbler down, probably best viewed from the end of the door, taking the catch off.

Does the door lock/unlock from the key in the drivers door or by pressing the central locking button on the centre console?

Problem solved! It was one of the pair of plastic bits that clicks onto the ball joints from the cylinder to the latch mechanism. It was a total nightmare fitting it, took several hours as I needlessly took the door card off. I should have read your post Mike, taking the latch plate off may have helped. To my shame I couldn't work out how to disconnect the handle completely though.

Both door actuators are broken. Each side gets power, so need to get hold of a couple to get the central locking to work.

That's good news, they are a very common problem and an easy one to fix. If you look closely at the old ones you will see the part number moulded into them. Mine were a few pound each from Exeter OPC a few years ago

My passenger door doesnt opeate from the key , I did take the door card off and have a look but couldnt see hot to get to thge door lock/drum itself or to the actual fault. Can you elaborqate at all on how you found the broken but.

I too can unlock and lock the door with the pull up button but the key does nothing but turn the barrel

The top photo shows 3 plastic bits, it's either the top or bottom one you need. I could not see the offending area from behind the door card, much to my annoyance having stripped it all off! Perhaps removing the actuator would have given me more visibility but I didn't go down that road.

By the latch plate on the end of the door, take the bolt out which holds the door handing in place. Then work the handle loose, I used a flat tip screwdriver with a bit of masking tape on. Try to get it far enough out to release the front part of the handle (it just hooks in place in the door). I couldn't work out how to completely disconnect the handle so just worked with it hanging loose. Shine a torch in while turning the key and you will see the round plate on the back of the drum which rotates, it has a ball on it. Shine the torch in the hole the handle came from as you pull the door button up and down, you will see a corresponding ball on the internal mechanism. The plastic bit fits on these 2 balls.

I can't think off the top of my head what one of the 2 plastic bits I used, but with a little thought it was quite obvious (the flat part fits on the door mechanism, the protruding part on the door handle mechanism). I will check the other one when I get home to confirm the part number for you though. Fitting it was a faff, but probably because I was incapable of removing the handle...... I pulled the handle as far out as I could, then used long nose pliers to hole the socket from the plastic piece over the internal ball joint, and pushed it into place with a small flat tipped screwdriver. Then I used a piece of wire to manoeuvre the other end of the plastic piece onto the ball on the handle mechanism. Using the same flat tipped screwdriver, I then managed to get enough leverage behind it to pop it over the ball.

I was quite happy with myself in the end, having come close to giving up due to lack of access, although 99% of people will consider it a simple job!
