I have zero understeer ..

then your corner entry speed is too low ;-)

in all seriousness, racers seem to go for a square setup unless they have huge power. I found it much easier to bring the back round under brakes with 225 width track tyres all round on my turbo.

225 is plenty of tyre for the rear of an s2

I think the main reason Porsche upped the tyres sizes for the m030 cars was less for any extra grip but more to cope with the heat cycles when on track, I think 225 with dedicated track day tyres will be fine, but wider 245 road tyres help prevent them overheating, if you have 9" wheels the normal size would actually be 255, the same as that put on the 968 CS.

But on a track 245 all round would be better - going back to my point about a square setup. I don't expect Porsche had any reason other than marketing to up the 030 tyre widths - people using road cars on track days wasn't very common 20 + years ago.

245 is the standard width for 9J 16" wheels on a 944 turbo

I agree, at the end of the day you fit tyres depending on the wheel size you have (and like the look of), your use (fast road/track) and what is available in those sizes, thats how I ended up with what I have, with a dedicated track car your choice may be different.

The Nurburgring has been open for Touristenfahrten (Tourist Driving) since the 1920's. Although your right over here track days did not become popular until much later...

TF isn't a track day [;)]

but I think we've split enough hairs now...

One thing I find with the 944 is that very slight changes can alter the balance of the car to an extent that even us mere mortals can easily feel the difference - a few psi in the tyres, a few clicks on the dampers, I'd put tyre widths (and wheel weights) into the same a category.
