Secondary DB replacement every 50k miles recommended in A.Streathers book.

My car has just turned 52k so its a good preventative measure if you havnt done it , even
with vent kit fitted.

Anyone had this job done , sounds complex job , so i need to find a good shop. What is the
right sort of price to pay ?

This is very labour intensive job by all accounts so it's worthwhile finding an indie with reasonable hourly rates, try Zentrum in Nottingham or RPM, Luton who both have fairly decent hourly workshop rates..

It's so labour intensive that many indys (including the one I use), replace the whole distributor (which is what Porsche recommend anyway). The cost ends up being a bit more but you get new caps and rotors at the same time (they come as part of the new distributor). So, the only way to do it on the cheap is to replace the belt yourself.

ETA: I've just checked the price of the distributor assembly and it's gone up a lot recently and now stands at over £500! They were £300 last time I checked, so maybe it's now more economical to have an indy replace the belt.

I replaced the belt myself a few years ago (about 6k miles now on it)...its a real faff but if you follow the process documented in Rennlist/Pelican it can be done for the cost of the belt, bearings and securing pin..all relatively cheap parts.

Took me a few days to complete, a couple of hours a night as i took my time and also painted the dizzy.

Biggest problem was getting the right sized bearings (you will lose some!). I went to a bearing specialist with mine to ensure they supplied the correct size!
The securing pin is available from the OPC for ......£1!! Absolute bargain!!

thanks guys. I just bought the belt from porscheshop for £25
I always check my local opc parts - only available as a full unit exchange
wait for it ... £850 !! + fitting .. ha ha

i will have a study & collect info on fitting myself , but prob choose an indie to fit.
pics welcome bernard if easy for you to e-mail to me

I've done this job myself and posted on here how to do it with pics, not very computer savvy so not sure how to call up the post, it's not a difficult job to do, but is a bit fiddly at times, I used to be a mechanic many moons ago and would advise that unless you have a reasonable knowledge of engines, get someone to do it for you

Not sure if this link will work, if it doesn't go to search in the 964 forum and type in distributer belt replacement, my post is there.

Also as well as the belt you'll need the metal pin which secures the distributer drive gear
