Dirty Spark Plug = Major Problem?

It'll be like a new on when you get it back plus it will add value to it in the long run. Still a shame it's happened but if you intend to keep it, it's money well spent.

All the best with this, I’m sure the end result with Hartech will be bulletproof.
Did you get any joy with the French Porsche dealer?

Hi All. Quick update.

The Porsche dealer in France as suspected did not want anything to do with any kind of responsibility and I have since found out that it is not conclusive that they were the straw that broke the camel's back. I personally still think they had a lot to do with it but I won't be pursuing it any further.

The good news it that the engine is reassembled and back in the car. The bad news is that on the first test drive, one of the rear springs broke! So that is currently being done and I await further news.

Given the Covid situation, I am unsure when the car might return to me here in France but I hope it is soon as it's now nearly 2 years since I last drove it. Once all is done, I will post exactly what has been done to the car as I have upgraded a fair amount of stuff in the engine (whilst the tin was open) and also done some precautionary replacements.

Thanks to all for the continued interest. Stay safe everybody.
Jules

Hi Jules,

I’m not surprised that the Porsche dealer wasn’t prepared to take any responsibility, and as you say it’s probably not worth the aggravation pursuing the matter any further, but good to hear that despite the minor setback good progress has been made by Harlech.

Here’s hoping that you get reunited with your car sooner rather than later! Keep us posted on progress.

Jeff

Bonjour Tous!

Here is an update on where things are at! With many thanks to Grant and all the gang at Hartech, the engine is now done, and the car is due to be shipped back to France on 12 December. I cannot wait!! I just hope lockdown is finished sufficiently by then so that I can get driving it again; it’s been nearly two years since I last drove the car.

Following confirmation from Hartech that the issue was cylinder scoring, this is what has been done to the engine. You will see that we used the "in for a penny, in for a pound approach” and also tackled all "whilst the engine is out” issues.

Engine rebuild including:
- New Hartech high performance piston set with new rings
- 6 new closed deck aluminium alloy nikasil plated cylinders
- timing chain set,
- timing chain guide set,
- crank shaft main bearing set,
- thrust bearing set,
- performance big end bearing set
- latest design 2006 onwards intermediate shaft with larger improved bearing
- basic cylinder head overhaul (strip heads, de-coke heads & valves, re-lap valves to seats, skim heads & reassemble with new valve stem seals)
- new oil/air separator,
- spark plugs,
- low temperature thermostat,
- oil cooler,
- tandem pump & pipe,
- crank position sensor,
- air filter,
- 4 exhaust clamps,
- 2 exhaust brackets,
- 3 vent lines,
- evap valve,
- belt,
- starter motor wiring harness,
- 2 engine mounts,
- gearbox mount,
- 2 main coolant feed
- feed & return pipes at either side of engine along with associated hoses,
- various other minor parts
- various fixing repairs
- removal, installation, re-commissioning with new oil, coolant, air-conditioning re-charge, testing, first oil filter change
- Brake pipes across top of engine / gearbox while engine out
- New rear springs as one broke during road test

Other Comments included:
- There were numerous faults, including spurious faults, stored in the computer modules, which is quite common. These were cleared and only spurious faults have returned
- The gear selection was harsher than usual when they first received the car but it has settled down after rebuild and is now normal.

Watch this space for an update on my first drive after December 12th!

Stay safe everyone.
Jules

Hi Jules
Wow that is some list, well worth doing if your planning on keeping the car, bet you can't wait. Great post.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Jules,
Really happy for you!
Welcome back in the game!
Out of curiosity, who much did Hartech charged you for all that work?

Thanks for the update and really impressed with your determination to see this through to a satisfactory conclusion.

Good luck for your first drive on the 12 December.

Hi BooToo997 et al,

Thanks! In fairness to Hartech, I don't think I should reveal the cost. I will say however that for what was done (i.e. pretty much the maximum possible), it seems extremely good value, especially compared to my local indy here in France, who wanted to charge me the same money for the minimum possible, and double the amount for what Hartech have actually done, and that's without Hartech's reputation!

That’s a very comprehensive rebuild Jules - most likely better than new with the closed-deck cylinders and IMS upgrade too - and hats off to you for your commitment to keeping the car running well into the future.

No mention of a clutch rebuild, so I presume it was deemed unnecessary during strip-down and inspection?

Fingers crossed all goes well when finally you’re reunited with the car.

Jeff

Hi All,

Quick update to say that the car passed it's Controle Technique (MOT) on Wednesday and sounded sweet as anything as I drove it to and from the test station. I have new tyres, front discs and pads to fit next Thursday and then I'm done, for now at least.

Thanks to everyone who has posted and provided advice and moral support; much appreciated.
Jules

Hi Jules,
Thanks for the update great news, let's hope for a better driving year this year so we can enjoy the cars.
Cheers
Steve.
