Dipstick broken. Advice sought.

Good afternoon; my oil dipstick has broken at the upper notch, in the tube. I'm read this is not the rarest of occurrences. I'm told that one can access the remote oil reservoir via the sharkfin and by removing the temperature sensor. This then allows access to the interior of the tank and its just possible to fish around for the broken part of the dipstick. Is this information right? I'm going to replace the dipstick with a 993 one, easier to read and without notches. Can I drive the car at all before I remove the broken part, or not?

It's been quite a while since I owned a 964, but if I remember correctly, the dipstick is quite a long-reach rod that extends just short of the bottom of the remote tank. As such, if it's just the top section that's broken, the residue must be lodged within the dipstick tube itself.
Can it be coaxed up using a magnet or some form of modified spring loaded grabber claw - even a thin flat blade magnetic screwdriver? Most tubes are a push fit into their tanks, so you could try pulling it away, using a little heat, to gain access to the remainder of the stick, but take care as the remote tank is plastic as I recall.
Assuming the end is now resting on the bottom of the tank with the shank supported within the tube, you should be ok to drive the car if the top of the tube is sealed to avoid oil splashes, but I wouldn't be planning any long journeys!
If all else fails, it'll be oil tank out, I'm afraid. 😱

Apologies if I'm way off beam with any of this - memory is not what it used to be - but perhaps these suggestions might prove helpful.

Regards,

Clive

Here's a diagram of the 964 oil system you may find helpful. The dipstick is No 10.
