Dipstick broken. Advice sought.

Good afternoon; my oil dipstick has broken at the upper notch, in the tube. I'm read this is not the rarest of occurrences. I'm told that one can access the remote oil reservoir via the sharkfin and by removing the temperature sensor. This then allows access to the interior of the tank and its just possible to fish around for the broken part of the dipstick. Is this information right? I'm going to replace the dipstick with a 993 one, easier to read and without notches. Can I drive the car at all before I remove the broken part, or not?
