Design Flaws

So just for clarity - with a flat battery the key in the boot lock will NOT unlock the boot?

Correct, the release is motor driven. If you can't physically get to the boot space, you'll need to find this terminal. This thread is the first I've heard about it though. Glad you can do it with a trickle charger, as that's all I'd have available.
 
To save weight on your car mick, which I presume to be a mechanical lock model, Id remove the electronic hatch release motor (sounds a little contradictory, but cars with mechanical locks have this to enable unlocking from within the cabin) and replace it with a bowden cable pull, similar to that found in 968CSs.

Weighs nowt and its extremely reliable.

Glad to hear my car has the mechanical type lock where a key is all you need! Ref weight saving, I understand the need but have not yet got my head around losing helpful things for a few grammes of weight saving - maybe I should and maybe I will... but not yet. Doughnuts and beer are nice too and if ever I got keen on weight saving I might feel the need to give these up! [8|]
