Deano's 981 S tinkering thread

Dean, I think I’ve got a couple of images I took when the car was initially traded in & I was at the dealership. If your initiating a blog of the car & would like them let me know, I think they are still on the laptop.

Cheers, Kevin.

That would be great, they provided all the advert pics which is good and your ones will add to that nicely.

I'm currently 9 hours into machine polishing it!

No problem, let me know your email address & I’ll send them through - expectation mgt - they are just quick snaps so nothing special. Good luck with machine polishing, I have a Rupes LP15 unit but haven’t used it yet (ill health). If you do a right up it would be good to hear about the products etc.

Cheers, Kevin.

Well that was a tough 12 hours!

Wash > clay > mask up > 2 stage machine polish > wash > detail.

Some pics.

Minor swirl marks and holograms:

Citrus degreaser to loosen up the worst stuff:

You can see the crap coming off with the lube:

Back out for a jet was and then I used Gtechniq panel wipe to get all clean.

Mask up:

Next up was a few paint chips. I really good trick here is to clean it with IPA, blob a bit of paint in the chip, wait 5 mins, flatten it with your finger, wait 30 mins or until it's pretty dry then use a bit of clay that is dead flat with IPA on it and rub in straight lines very lightly. This way you will completely fill the chip and have no raised paint.

Ignore the paint residue, this will polish off.

Cant really do after pics as you genuinely cant see them.

Next up was 8 hours of machine polishing:

Back out for a wash with lots of attention on all the panel joins:

Hey. Thanks.

I'm a big fan of gtechniq coatings but wheels just need more regular attention. I don't believe anything last month's and months of miles.

I use valet pro dragon's breath and billburry cleaner (2:1), a really big soft brush and then Poorboy's wheels sealant. I find it quite easy as the brakes are not huge. My RS4 was a nightmare.

https://www.slimsdetailin...sealant-8oz-236ml.html

The combo does a good job of making it easy to clean. Like you say it's the edge of the spokes and the inners that get the worst of it.

I give them a rub over of Poorboy's every wash when I do the tyres.

Dean

Apologies for 'butting in' but like you both I take pride in clean wheels [non-Porsche owner at the moment]. Ultimately given the high temps and corrosive materials this comes down to frequency of washing. My routine tends to start with a blast of the wheel with a Pressure Washer to hose the loose dirt off, then a squirt in all the nooks and crevices with whatever wheel product I've chosen at the time. Leave it for a minute then agitate with a brush - OCD warning - I have a wheel bolt brush which gets in to the hard spots on the face of the wheel, then a change to a wheel woolie and clean the barrel of the wheel. Next up a microfiber sponge going in every corner including the rear of the spokes. Wheel then blasted again with the PW and dried and given a quick spirtz with a sealant. I only use the wheel cleaning product every few weeks but clean them every week with all the other steps. I'll resist going into detail on the tyre cleaning process,....I did warn you.

Reference the difference pre-Dean's clean, I have a few pics when the car arrived post trade in and believe me Dean has improved it greatly.

Dean I've tried three time to send the pics but no joy, it states address not recognised? Clearly it is or I wouldn't have got the email so I'll try from another device later.

Regards, Kevin

So the car is at Cambridge POC for the latest PCM firmware, maps and addition of the online services for live traffic and Amazon music from the screen.

The courtesy car is some what bigger than the Cayman!

Well it didn't really work. Connection to Germany was buggered.

I went from PCM 4.41 to 4.52 and got online services activated but 4.76 and the new maps will be another time. Been offered a good price and a 'more sporty' courtesy car when I go back.

I've already got V4.76 so to get live traffic updates do I just need online services activated and what might that cost ?

Gtechniq C5 for the wheels is awesome stuff in my opinion.

I had perfectly clean wheels, prepped with Gtechniq Panel Wipe.

Applied C5 all round and buffed as directions on bottle.

Daily used car, in all weather, mainly on cross country B roads, the finish of the wheels was just like new after a year and 12k miles.

I removed the wheels to decontaminate them and top up with protection, but they didn't need anything doing, just a top up with C2v3.

The melting point of c5 is something like 350degC, so any sintered brake dust will not destroy or penetrate the finish.

I seriously had zero brake dust build up after a year.

I haven't got round to doing the wheels on my 987 yet, but will do in the coming weeks now the weathers getting a bit better.

Prep is key with C5

Awesome thread btw Deano !

I think I need a red Cayman in my life after seeing this [8D]

So the coating has cured and it went back for a final stage polish and then the new to market cartec ceramic guard applied.

The finish is like nothing I've seen before! Porsche Cambridge couldn't get over it, the body shop guy had me there for an hour asking questions about it!
