De-badged and Matt Black?

Ex Skyline

New member
As previously stated, when i get the car back from JMG, i think i'm going to take it to my friend's bodyshop for a de-badge and a Matt Black re-spray (i will keep the bonnet badge on of course). Can you let me have a few opinions please? Will it look "the mutz nutz" or, as my interfering wife say's, will it be 'sacrilidge'?!! Well.........?

I agree with your wife, but then such things are down to personal taste. A friend of mine did the same to a MR2 including full body kit. It looked awful, like something thrown together in someone's shed, he liked it, or so he said.
I wouldn't do it Pete, but as said it's your car so your decision, one thing that you should consider though is it's resale value which I would anticipate to be hit heavily.

Up to you mate

Why not wrap it, then when you get bored its easy to go back

Totally agree. Plus if paintwork is good now it will preserve it for when you want to sell in the future.

I have to agree with Pete, I paint cars for a living and would never advise a matt paint job. Even if you do go with it... for it to look anyway right you will have to do the door shuts, inside doors, engine bay etc....It's also a bitch to keep clean and streak free. Dont even think about spilling petrol or any kind of solvent near it! Just dont do it!...If you really want a matt car... a vinyl wrap might be a solution...expensive, but at least you can always remove it should you wish and still have your original paint underneath. Its your car and its your choice...best of luck with whatever way you decide!

if you are feeling saucy I would wrap it,then you can always back pedal if you don't like it after a while,I would find someone involved in motorsport wrapping as maybe it's cheaper?

Matt black wraps looked amazing. About 8 years ago. [&o]

There's an Aston I see regularly, and it looks naffer that a naff thing now. As out of date as stone-cladding on a house, or an avocado bathroom suite.

Just my opinion, if you want to do it then enjoy!

I'd go for a timeless Porsche look if you want to go mad. The Gulf colours, Martini decals, something like that.

Hi Pete,

Porsche = Shiney, spakling & Zymoled [8D][8D]

Skyline etc. = Matt

Nuff said, listen to the wife (for a change) [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Have to agree. Seen an M3 and a Cayenne in matt black recently, both looked truly awful. Have to agree with the child painting in shed analogy! [:(]

Old cars and matt paint look so wrong imo, better save your dosh and spend it on something that will improve the car like suspension refresh or bodywork restoration....

Zowie Wowie Bowie!! Where did that lot come from?!! Guess i should give that idea a lot more thought indeed. Not one positive comment. My old woman is dead against it even though she agree's with me that it's my toy. She say's she don't want me to drive about looking like a cnut! A middle aged cnut at that! I don't want to wrap it so i guess a full respray in shiney original Porsche Black is now on the cards (how about just a Matt Black bonnet)? Doh.........!!!

I went from red 2 pearl black, car was painted very well and looked great, black is my favour colour 4 most cars expessaily 944. However one stone chip and I had red. Wouldn't change a cars colour again unless it was taken back 2 metal. Was 2 pak and baked but still very soft. Was a nightmare 2 clean without scratching. Never like matt black, looks cheap and unfinished. Differnt colour panels seems like a cheaper way 2 fix then colour macth or blend.

Deff debadge and remove the rear sticker. De rubber the rear bumper. But yours is a turbo and as such I would keep the badge or maybe black on black.

That's the 944 forum for you! I think most people here are far from purists, but mods have to be sympathetic. Fit a bonnet scoop that does nothing but make you look like a Halford's wanabee and you'll not get a lot of respect, spend years developing a turbo improvement that's good for years of reliable extra power you will get a lot of positive feedback.

I love that Evo in James' link. Some cars can carry a matt wrap; it just fits the profile of the car, and if you have the balls to drive an Evo you won't care what people think about the paintwork. I looked back, and it was the 2006 MPH show where I saw a matt-black wrapped Bentley. It looked awesome, and was the star of the show. Think about it, what would you think if you saw that car today? A chrome or gold wrap couldn't look more out of date IMO.

You need to pick a paint job that suits the car, has some history, and won't date. Either original colours from the period, or classic Porsche looks such as the racing colours. [:)]

Ok guys iv'e slept on it and it's gonna be a new, shiney Porsche Black respray (that's what it is already) and a Carbon fibre bonnet perhaps. Off to work now.....and happy[:)][8D]
