Daytime Running Lights on 997.2 Turbo – Confused New Owner

Hi all,
My first post!
I’m newish to PCGB & to my 997.2 Turbo (and loving it so far!), but I’m a bit confused about the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs).
When I unlock the car, the front fog lights seem to come on briefly (in home mode), but then they switch off shortly after. I was under the impression that DRLs were standard on the 997.2 turbo— is that correct?
Can anyone clarify:
  • Does the 997.2 Turbo come with DRLs as standard?
  • If so, how can I make them stay on while driving during the day?
  • I can see a setting in the PCM for enabling, but it seems to make no difference, so I am thinking maybe something is wrong?
Appreciate any advice or insights from more experienced owners.
Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome.
Without sitting in mine, and from memory, I set mine via the lower control stalk and not via the PCM. With the ignition on, push stalk away from you to get into the settings, scroll to "lights" by repeatedly pushing down. Push away from you again. You should see a daylight box to tick. The box should have a little black square in it when the DRLs are active. If not, push away to "tick" the box. I'll check mine later to make sure that's the correct sequence. Last set mine about 14 years ago!!
See also post number 8 on this thread. Although it's for a 997.1, it's the same for the 997.2

You should have them as standard.

As above - 9x7.2 DRL UK spec should have an onboard computer (not PCM) menu entry that allows them to be "on/off" - I have seen a couple of cars over the past few years where that option has been coded out ( no idea why ) - so, if it's not there in the "stalk" menu then you need to find someone with a decent diags setup (Porsche PIWIS, perhaps Durametric, perhaps some of the Foxwell or Autel porsche specific scanners) and get it re-enabled.

Whereabouts are you - someone local enough may have the kit to help if needed.

Thanks both.
I used the wrong terminology with respect where I see the light setting: not PCM, but the onboard computer via the stalk as you both say. I do see the same setting, but the toggle makes no difference to the DRL. I am assuming the DRLs are the front fog lights, but it is not like any other lights come on either.
I am based in Chelmsford. Will take car to a garage, but thought it better to check here first if I was making a basic error before taking it in.

I think you might find that what you have is what it is. I went through the same process with a 987.2 recently. All that happened was that the dipped headlights came on permanently.

Potentially a different implementation but in the 987.2 - with halogens - the DRL's are a thin led strip around the edge of the fog lights by default. You can alternatively code them (via diags) to be in headlight side lights (but may have been dipped headlights - its been 6 years since I had a halogen equipped 987.2) instead. On cars with PDLS (Bi-xenon) there are no front fog lights ( beam pattern means they aren't required apparently) - and the whole of what would be the foglight is the DRL - much larger led light.

I have seen a couple of halogen cars where the DRL's are the sides - and I *think* from memory - in all cases the rear lights are on as well ( but I couldn't swear to that )

I have a 987.2 Cayman and don’t know if I can add much to what has been said already. Looking at a photo of a 997.2 Turbo with Bi-Xenon PDLS [headlight washers are the obvious clue] it seems that there are three light assemblies per side. Just for clarification I assume that the top lights are the indicators, the [circular] middle ones are the DRLs and the lower are spot/fog lights? Clearly the DRLs always should be illuminated when the ignition is on.

Car booked in for a service & check of the DRLs 1st week of November. Will update this thread when someone in overalls gives me the low down on the matter.
